State's Regional Stay At Home Order Extended
In a statement issued by the California Department of Public Health, the State has extended its Regional Stay at Home Order, which was originally set to expire on January 8, due to the region’s ICU bed capacity remaining below 15%. All current restrictions will remain in place until the Bay Area’s four-week ICU projection shows a capacity of greater than or equal to 15%. The state will assess the region’s ICU projections in the coming days and announce a formal decision on whether the Bay Area meets the criteria to exit the order.

Current available ICU capacity by region:
  • Bay Area: 3.0%
  • Greater Sacramento: 6.4%
  • Northern California: 27.5%
  • San Joaquin Valley: 0.0%
  • Southern California: 0.0%

ICU capacity projections for regions that are eligible to exit the order are calculated daily based on four factors: current estimated regional ICU capacity available, measure of current community transmission, current regional case rates, and the proportion of ICU cases being admitted. Decreasing community transmission and increasing the health system capacity can help a region's projected ICU capacity so they can exit the order.

SBA and Treasury Announce PPP Re-Opening
"The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), in consultation with the Treasury Department, announced that the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) will re-open the week of January 11 for new borrowers and certain existing PPP borrowers. To promote access to capital, initially, only community financial institutions will be able to make First Draw PPP Loans on Monday, January 11, and Second Draw PPP Loans on Wednesday, January 13. The PPP will open to all participating lenders shortly thereafter. Updated PPP guidance outlining Program changes to enhance its effectiveness and accessibility was released on January 6 in accordance with the Economic Aid to Hard-Hit Small Businesses, Non-Profits, and Venues Act.

This round of the PPP continues to prioritize millions of Americans employed by small businesses by authorizing up to $284 billion toward job retention and certain other expenses through March 31, 2021, and by allowing certain existing PPP borrowers to apply for a Second Draw PPP Loan."

The California Art Quilt: From the Summer of Love to the New Millennium
Learn about the cultural forces that led to the emergence of art quilts and the California artists who were among the first to embrace the medium as their primary means of expression.

In the last decades of the 20th century, California quilt makers charted new territory in quilt making, leading the nation in creativity and innovation. During the 1970s and 1980s, California artists were among the first to embrace the quilt medium as their primary means of expression. More traditional quilt makers also expanded horizons and even pushed the boundaries of what could be called a quilt.

Nancy Bavor, the executive director of the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, presents an illustrated talk on the cultural forces that led to the emergence of art quilts, highlighting some pioneering California artists who blazed the trail for contemporary quiltmakers.
