Guest Speaker: Paul Bergman

Topic: "Real to Reel Justice: Truth and Trickery in Courtroom Movies."

Paul Bergman is a Professor of Law Emeritus at the UCLA School of Law, where he has taught since 1970. His teaching awards include a University Distinguished Teaching award and the Dickson Award for distinguished service and scholarship by a UCLA Emeritus Professor. He has given film clip-based presentations at legal conferences throughout the United States, and has appeared on many radio and TV shows, including The Today Show. He has authored books on Trial Advocacy, Evidence and Counseling as well as three books on the legal system for non-lawyers. He also has written numerous law articles that have analyzed how law and lawyers are depicted in films and on TV.

Paul will show entertaining clips from courtroom movies and discuss their impact on popular understanding of law, lawyers and justice. His latest book, Real to Reel Justice - Truth and Trickery in Courtroom Movies, is due to be published this spring.

Guest Speaker: Aaron Celestian, Ph.D.

Topic: "Crystals and the Search for Life!"

Dr. Celestian presented an extremely interesting and informative discussion on the possibilities of an earth-type life on other planets, and the mineralogical conditions which would allow, or have allowed, alternate life forms to exist on extra-terrestrial bodies.

Dr. Celestian holds adjunct teaching and research faculty positions at the University of Southern California and is an Affiliate Research Scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In addition to his research, Dr. Celestian oversees the "Gem and Mineral Hall" at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles.
SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP ACTIVITIES
HISTORY SIG - ZOOM

The History SIG is hosted by Arnie Geffner using ZOOM to discuss the topic of great battles in history. It temporarily is not meeting, but normally is a monthly ZOOM presentation consisting of a video presentation followed by discussion and commentary. WESTSIDE WALKING GROUP

Due to city/county restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Westside Walking Group currently is hobbled! Once it becomes safe, however, the group will continue to rendezvous in Santa Monica at 9:30am on Thursday of each week. These casual hikes begin near the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Marguerita Avenue in Palisades Park, and continue downtown to the Fairmont-Miramar Hotel near Wilshire Boulevard where members stop for coffee, conversation, and (sometimes) pastries, before returning. STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING
BRANDEIS MEN’S GROUP STEERING COMMITTEE MINUTES
 
Wednesday, December 23, 2020
 
1. At 10:07 AM, the ZOOM meeting of the BMG Steering Committee (BSC) was called to order by President Louis Bernstein. A quorum was established.

2. Marv Alperin, Randy Barnes, Louis Bernstein, Tony Borwick, Al Dubin, Sheldon Ellis, Myron Forst, Howard Green, Phil Greenwald, John Harris, Richard Hirschkoff, Harold Katzman, Mel Miller, Gerry Sallus, Bernie Schiffer, Bernie Schneier, Stan Weinberg and Jerry Weinstein were present. Arnie Geffner, Murray Kornblit and Bernie Schweitzer were absent. George Rothman is no longer a BSC member and his position is vacant.

3. The Minutes of the November 25, 2020, BSC meeting, previously sent to each BSC member by eMail, were approved.

4. Treasurer Bernie Schneier gave his report. Details of his report were sent to each BSC member as three attachments to his December 22nd eMail message. President Louis asked Bernie to read his list of members who have not paid their 2020 dues. Volunteers agreed to contact those Members. The Treasurer’s report was then accepted.

5. Bernie Schiffer, chairman of the Special Interests Groups (SIG) Committee, gave his report. A discussion then ensued concerning the status of SIG. Chess, Current Events and Opera SIG are active. History, Legal, Sports, and Walking SIG are temporarily inactive. John Harris proposed a ZOOM meeting of the Sports SIG for the College Football Championship Playoffs. President Louis announced the formation of a new Movies SIG by the BNC Western Women’s Group.

6. The chairman of the Speakers Committee, Harold Katzman, gave his report. A motion to authorize him to pay individual honoraria of up to $150.00 was passed. Harold told us about the speaker for the next General Meeting; Paul Bergman, a UCLA Law Professor.

7. President Louis announced the date of our next General Meeting as tentatively set to occur on Thursday, January 21st.

8. BMG Vice-President Tony Borwick discussed publicity for BMG and putting announcements of our next General Meeting in local newspapers. Randy Barnes explained the process of sending out Newsletters and incorporating that information into updates of our website.

9. Myron Forst, chairman of the Membership Committee, announced a ZOOM meeting of his committee on Monday, December 28th, at 10:00 AM. He will send out reminder eMail messages.

10. The chairman of the Telephone Committee, Stan Weinberg, reported that Dues Reminders were again sent out by telephone.

11. No Old Business.

12. New Business. Information concerning the current status of COVID-19 vaccinations was exchanged.

All members are reminded that in order to belong to the Los Angeles Brandeis Men's Group (BMG), one must first join the Brandeis National Committee (BNC). The Brandeis National Committee previously sent notices for the
2020-2021 annual dues.

BNC membership is July 1 - June 30 of each year. Membership dues can be paid by writing a check made out to BNC for $60 (single) or $100 (couple) and sending to Treasurer Bernie Schneier (address below in BMG section). National dues can also be paid by forwarding the BNC check to Brandeis University at their below address, or by going online (link is below).
