February 2022 Canadian Newsletter
Greetings!
In these difficult times of a serious threat of a further Russian invasion of Ukraine, I want to thank you all for your strong support of the Ukrainian people, and your commitment to assisting the UCC’s efforts in advocating for a robust Canadian response to Russia’s aggression.

This past weekend, on February 6, thirty communities in all ten provinces came together to turn Canada Blue and Yellow. From rural communities, to urban centres, from places where Ukrainians have lived in Canada for a century, to places where new Ukrainian communities are growing, from the Atlantic in east to the Pacific in the west – we showed the Ukrainian people that Canada Stands with Ukraine!

We were very pleased to work with many community leaders, volunteers and organizers across the country to support these demonstrations. It was also wonderful to see the high level of engagement from our youth from coast to coast. Your energy and dedication were truly inspirational to all of us. The UCC will continue to forcefully advocate for our government to immediately provide Ukraine with defensive weapons and significantly strengthen sanctions on Russia.

This past week, unfortunately, we also saw a reminder of the importance of uniting to stand up against hate and fighting disinformation – Future Bakery, a community institution in Toronto was vandalized in appalling act of hate against Canadians and Ukrainians. We will not be intimidated by cowards who target our community because of our support for democratic values and principles we hold dear as Canadians, and will continue to work hard on issues important to all of us.

Once again, thank you all for your wonderful support of the UCC and all of your efforts and hard work!

Canadians overwhelmingly support assisting Ukraine, providing weapons
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress urges the Government of Canada to hear the voice of the Canadian people and substantially increase military assistance to Ukraine, including the provision of weapons to Ukraine’s Armed Forces.

Hate crime targeting Ukrainian
Canadians in Toronto
The Ukrainian Canadian community is appalled by the hate crime that targeted a Ukrainian-owned business in Toronto. Future Bakery, which displayed a #StandWithUkraine banner to show solidarity with the Ukrainian people, was defaced under cover of night by cowards who support Russian president Putin’s kleptocratic, criminal regime.

COMMUNITY NEWS
A rich part of Ukraine’s musical heritage is its ensemble singing which was often done in multi-part harmony and was a mainstay of traditional village music for centuries.

In the 20th century many ethnographers and folklorists sought to gather and preserve these songs before they disappeared. Many also brought back authentic ensemble singing by popularizing it through public performances and festivals.
Ukrainian ethnomusicologist and performer, Marichka Marczyk, has compiled a comprehensive digital archive of old Folk songs from all regions of Ukraine( Folk Songs of Ukraine).

“It was truly moving and inspiring to see communities from all 10 provinces – from St. John’s on the Atlantic coast – to Victoria on the Pacific coast, and more than two dozen places in between – come together to show that Canadians Stand With Ukraine!” said UCC National President Alexandra Chyczij.
