The Gold Foundation is pleased to announce that the 2020 Pearl Birnbaum Hurwitz Humanism in Healthcare Award will be presented to Hoonani (Nani) Cuadrado, Director of the Valley Health Partners Street Medicine in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania. Ms. Cuadrado, a physician assistant, has devoted her career to caring for the most vulnerable wherever they are, across the globe on medical missions and in her own community, on the streets, under bridges, and in encampments. She is an expert in human-trafficking and has trained hundreds of health professionals in how to help identify and care for victims of sex trafficking.
The Gold Foundation is also recognizing two remarkable women with honorable mentions in 2020: Dr. Chinazo Cunningham of Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Dr. Ann Garment of Bellevue Hospital/NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

As the COVID-19 pandemic began and medical schools shifted online this spring, Gold Humanism Honor Society member Lauren Clopper looked for another way to stay connected to the local hospital. A fourth-year medical student at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Lauren led a group of students in creating a new mural to brighten a stairwell at the school-affiliated hospital. The mural depicts several local community health organizations as a beating heart: Both are critical to the function of a greater body.

Storytelling is one of the most powerful tools we have to acknowledge, distill, and share our experiences. This Gold Human InSight Webinar was led by writer Judith Hannan and includes readings and interactive prompts. Ms. Hannan is the author of Motherhood Exaggerated, her memoir of discovery and transformation during her daughter’s cancer treatment and her transition into survival. Her most recent book is The Write Prescription: Telling Your Story to Live With and Beyond Illness. This Webinar was recorded on Sept. 17 with a live audience, and the recording is now available.

2020 has been an incredibly difficult, unsettling, and tragic year. In this Gold Human InSight Webinar, Dr. Ron Epstein, co-founder of Mindful Practice and professor at University of Rochester, shares how to be present and robust in times of fear. With both practical techniques and deep insights, Dr. Epstein focuses on turning toward dissonance rather than ignoring or supressing. By being attentive and practicing being in each moment fully, you can flourish even in this era of uncertainty.

The 2020 GHHS National Initiative,
Humanism and Healing: Structural racism and its impact on medicine, is designed to encourage GHHS members to use their leadership roles to start or extend conversations about racism and its impact on medicine/healthcare in their local communities and beyond, to create space for grieving, processing, and bearing witness around this topic, or to take action in one of many powerful ways that humanism can begin to heal.
For example, GHHS chapters could create reflective writing working groups. They could use articles, film, and other pieces of history to examine the history of racism in medicine and/or their local area. Such activities can help start conversations around racism and deepen understanding.

The AAMC's Annual Meeting: Learn Serve Lead is going virtual this year! From November 16 to 18, AAMC will host amazing sessions and speakers, including 19th U.S. Surgeon General and 2020 Vilcek-Gold Award recipient Dr. Vivek Murthy, NIAID Director Dr. Anthony Fauci, journalist Ann Curry, author and historian Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones, and many others.
The Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare, created jointly by the Gold Foundation and the Vilcek Foundation, is presented to each year's honoree at the AAMC Annual Meeting. This year, Dr. Murthy will give brief remarks and then join in a fireside chat with Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, the 2019 Vilcek-Gold Award recipient who helped bring national attention to the Flint water crisis. Don't miss this session: 1-2 p.m. ET on November 17!

Join The Alpert Medical School for a five-part virtual conference series on the impact of the electronic healthcare record and health information technologies on the patient-practitioner relationship. In addition, these sessions will specifically examine how human relationships account for software and device design and implementation, ethical stewardship of shared data, and the current best practices for incorporating health information technologies into clinical practice, all while maintaining patient-centered care. The conference is led in part by Dr. Elizabeth Toll, a Gold grantee and long-time supporter.
The second session, "Relationships Matter More Than Ever, and They Are Changing; Addressing Disparities," will be held on Nov. 6. CME credits are available.
