STEM Beef Experience
New York Agriculture in the Classroom and the New York Beef Council are partnering to offer an exciting virtual event that will bring teachers, beef producers, and chef together. In this beef-centric event, educators will see how they can bring STEM learning to life by building authentic learning experiences through food. You will virtually visit farms, processors, and chefs for live experiences, and conduct hands-on lessons from home.  Applications for this 3-day virtual educator professional development experience are due on June 1, 2021. Participating teachers will be eligible for up to 11 hours of CTLE credit and will receive a classroom bundle of resource valued over $200. Visit our website to register.

Beef Lifecycles Virtual Field Trip
Virtually transport your students to a beef farm and share how beef is grown and cared for. Students will chat directly with a farmer from Thunder View Farm is located in Grahamsville, NY. The Coombe Family will explain the beef lifecycle, cattle care, and environmental stewardship practices on their farm.
The Virtual Field Trip will take place on Wednesday, May 26 at 12:30pm and is open to all grade levels.

in "Schoolyard Sugaring Maple Contest Photography Exhibit"
The Schoolyard Sugaring Maple Contest Photography Exhibit will run from May 14 until June 20, 2021 and will display select student submissions from all 26 selected photographers.

Grow with Us Grant: Sprouting Inspiration
 New York Agriculture in the Classroom is excited to announce that the 2021 Grow with Us grant application is now open. The Grow with Us grant was created to support teachers who are seeking to facilitate experiential learning opportunities using agriculture as the context for learning.
Teachers who are selected will receive a Tower Garden science bundle which includes three Tower Gardens, dollies, nutrient solution, pH testing and balancing kit, starter seed pack, and grow lights.

Scholarships available for the Virtual National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference
Do you engage your students through agriculture focused learning opportunities? Maybe you would like to learn how to meet New York State core learning standards by teaching through the lens of agriculture?
New York Agriculture in the Classroom is offering a scholarship to New York State teachers and select education professionals to virtually attend the 2021 National Agriculture in the Classroom conference: "Fields of Dreams" June 29-Jul 1, 2021.
 This 3-day conference provides dynamic professional development and networking opportunities, agricultural experiences, and classroom resources to teachers and education professionals from across the nation. Participants will also receive 15 hours of CTLE credits for participating.

Christina Sue Lilja Resource Grants
Christina Sue Lilja Resource Grants (formerly known as White-Reinhardt Resource Grants) are made possible by the CSL Foundation. The CSL Foundation was established to carry on late American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture (AFBFA) director Christy Lilja's beliefs of helping others in need and to continue to advocate for educating K-12 teachers and students about the importance of agriculture. The purpose of these grants is to provide funds to educators to enable them to purchase accurate agricultural literacy materials from the AFBFA store for use in their classrooms. By providing this grant, AFBFA hopes to help students gain access to more accurate information about agriculture.

In the Parlor with Dairy Farmers (Ag Mag Supplement)
Welcome to the In the Parlor with Dairy Farmers virtual tour! This is an online resource that pairs with the Dairy Ag Mag and would work well for students that are learning at home or in the classroom. In this K-2 lesson, students will develop an awareness that farmers provide the variety and abundance of foods we need to develop and maintain healthy lifestyles.

In this lesson students will explore the sources of a variety of agricultural products and discover that farms can be diverse in size and in products that are grown and raised.

Students will explore tart cherry production in the United States and explain why producers and consumers are needed in the cherry industry in this lesson for grades 3-5.

Hungry Pests
This lesson teaches about invasive species: what they are, the threats they pose, and damages they can cause. Students will identify individual pests and invasive species and discover what they threaten, where they live, and the pathways hungry pests use to enter new locations. Finally students move into action and explore what they can do to prevent the spread of invasive species.

This lab introduces students to the effect temperature has on reducing and controlling the growth of bacteria. Students will use conventionally pasteurized and ultra-high-temperature (UHT) milk to observe how different temperatures (hot, room temperature, cool, and freezing) affect the growth of spoilage bacteria. They will also learn about the importance of pasteurization in keeping food safe.

Good Taste: Honey Bee Forager Food Preference
In this lesson students learn about the foraging behavior of bees and hypothesize if the bee's behavior is related to its ability to detect sugar. Students will then determine which type of foraging bee would be best for pollination or honey production. Students will learn about the process of gel electrophoresis as a genetic tool and analyze DNA to identify strains of bees who are better pollen-collecting bees or better nectar-collecting bees.

Find Your Future Career
Students will discover the variety of agricultural careers available and consider their future career paths in terms of economics, interests, and suitability to their personal talents and characteristics in this lesson.

Maddi's Fridge
Best friends Sofia and Maddi live in the same neighborhood, go to the same school, and play in the same park, but while Sofia's fridge at home is full of nutritious food, the fridge at Maddi's house is empty. Sofia learns that Maddi's family doesn't have enough money to fill their fridge and promises Maddi she'll keep this discovery a secret. But because Sofia wants to help her friend, she's faced with a difficult decision: to keep her promise or tell her parents about Maddi's empty fridge. Maddi's Fridge addresses issues of poverty with honesty and sensitivity while instilling important lessons in friendship, empathy, trust, and helping others.
