PLEASE check to see if your child can answer any of the following questions each morning. If yes, please keep them home, so they are not spreading germs.
Student Health Screening Entry Form
Please assess your child daily for the following symptoms and answer the contact questions.
• Fever of 100.4 or higher
• Uncontrolled cough
• Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
• Sore throat
• Loss of sense of smell or taste
• Muscle aches
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Is your child currently awaiting COVID-19 test results? If yes, please keep your child home and notify the school nurse when test results received. Further instructions will be discussed at that time.
• Does your child live in the same household with someone positive for COVID-19? If yes, your child must quarantine for 10 days from the last date of contact with the positive individual. The quarantine period may be shortened to as few as 7 days if a negative PCR test result is obtained on day 6 or later from exposure to the positive case. The Dept. of Health will assist in clearing your child to return to school once they have received the negative test result.
FROM THE DISTRICT OFFICE REGARDING NEW GUIDELINES FOR QUARANTINING
Beginning 12/9/2020
The CDC and the Florida Department of Health continue to recommend quarantine for 14 days from the date of exposure. However, there is new guidance that allows for a close contact to return to school earlier. There are two options that may allow the close contact to return to school/work before the full 14-day quarantine period has been met:
- The quarantine period may be shortened to 10 days from last exposure to the positive case if daily symptom monitoring indicates the close contact remains symptom free. The contact can return to school or work on Day 11. HOWEVER, it is extremely important that the contact continues daily monitoring for signs and symptoms through 14 days, as well as, practice social distancing, always wears a mask, and washes hands frequently. If signs or symptoms develop at any point, the contact should immediately isolate, seek medical care, and call the Health Department.
- The Quarantine may be shortened to as few as 7 days if a negative PCR test result is obtained on day 6 or later from exposure to the positive case. A PCR test is required and a rapid antigen test CANNOT be substituted. The test must be collected on day 6 or after, and if it is negative, the contact can return on Day 8 of quarantine, if he or she remains symptom free.
FAQs:
DO I HAVE TO GET MY CHILD TESTED?
No, assuming your child remains symptom-free, he or she does not need a negative test to return to school on Day 11. If they develop symptoms you should seek medical care and call the health department.
HOW DO I GET PCR TESTING?
- You can obtain PCR testing through your medical provider
- You can obtain PCR testing at a public testing site
- REMEMBER: the rapid antigen test is not accepted, it must be a PCR test
- If your child develops symptoms, seek medical care and call the Health Department
- Make sure results can be provided within 24 to 48 hours. If the results are likely to take longer than 48 hours, it may be better to quarantine through day 10 and return to school on day 11, if no symptoms. CHILDREN WITH A KNOWN PENDING TEST RESULT SHOULD NOT RETURN TO SCHOOL
IF I GET A NEGATIVE PCR TEST RESULT, OBTAINED ON OR AFTER DAY 6 FOLLOWING EXPOSURE, WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP?
Call the Health Department to check if the result has been reported electronically in their system. If the result is reported, they will let the school know that your child may return, assuming they remain asymptomatic. If you have been notified that the result is negative but it has not yet shown up in the DOH system, you will need to provide a copy of the lab directly to the Health Department. NOTE: Please DO NOT fax or drop off copies of labs without first contacting the Health Department to make appropriate arrangements.

Students Can Apply to Join an Academy for 2021-2020 NOW…but first, Visit Nease’s Academy Open House Website!
All current 9th graders are eligible to apply to begin a new Academy or Program of Choice in St. Johns County for the 2021-2022 school year, and the application window opened on Friday, January 8th. If your student is interested in joining any Academy program in the district, he/she can apply for a spot in the Academy via the online application system in Home Access Center.
To learn all about the Programs of Choice that Nease has to offer, visit our Academy Open House website for classroom tours, informational presentations, and to hear from students: Nease's Academy Open House Website
We will be offering LIVE zoom Q and A sessions with instructors on January 28th, from 6 – 7 pm.
The application window opened on January 8th, and closes February 5th, at 5 pm.
Academy Intent to Return Process
Before winter break, all Communications, Hospitality, and Engineering Academy students will be asked to indicate if they want to remain in their current Academy for the 2021-22 school year by signing an Intent to Return roster. If the student checked “Yes,” than that student will be automatically re-enrolled in the Academy for 2021-22. The student will also receive a recommendation to move on to the next level Academy course, as long as he/she is meeting Academy requirements.
If an Academy student checked “No” on the roster to indicate that he/she does not want to continue in the Academy next year, a Program of Choice Drop Form will be sent home with those students next week. All Academy teachers will be handing out drop forms to the students who indicated that they do not want to continue on in the Academy for the 2021-2022 school year. Distance Learners who indicated that they wanted to drop their Academy will have a form sent via Schoology.
Students who will be zoned for Tocoi Creek High School in 2021-22 but are returning Nease Academy students can remain at Nease. These students will then be designated as out-of-zone Academy students. The St. Johns County School District does not provide transportation to students attending an out-of-zone school. Because transportation is not offered to out-of-zone students in our district, families need to discuss whether they can provide transportation to students who are zoned for Tocoi HS, but who choose to continue in their Academy program at Nease. As long as the student can provide transportation, keeps an Academy course on his/her schedule every year, and remains within Academy grade and behavioral guidelines, he/she can attend at an out-of-zone school. If you have any questions about the Intent to Return process, please reach out to Jaime Combs at Jaime.combs@stjohns.k12.fl.us
If you have any questions about the Communications Academy, Stellar Academy of Engineering, or Academy of Hospitality & Tourism, reach out to Academy Coordinator Jaime Combs, at Jaime.combs@stjohns.k12.fl.us

Course Registration for the 2021-2022 School Year:
Course registration for the 2021-2022 school year began on Monday, January 11th. School Counselors will be in classrooms every day between now and spring break in order to meet with each student one-on-one regarding their individual selections. All of the information regarding scheduling (our schedule to meet with students, a registration video from Mrs. Kunze, course progressions, the elective video, and course catalog) are available on our website. If parents have specific questions, it is recommended that they write them on their student’s course registration form so that the School Counselors can address those concerns during their individual meeting. Students will receive their recommendation form a few days before their scheduled visit and will need to have spoken with their parents regarding their selections, considered which electives and scheduling options they want, and obtained a parent signature on their recommendation form prior to attending their appointment. For more details, please see the “Checklist for the Course Registration Process” on-line.
This week we will be meeting with Devine, Ways, Cassano, Ware, and Porcellini’ s English classes.
Bright Futures- SENIORS ACT NOW!
As we approach the end of the first semester, we want to encourage any students who are still holding on to community service hours to get those turned in to their counselor ASAP. Students who meet all of the qualifications and apply prior to the end of the first semester have the opportunity to “lock-in” the scholarship at that time. Students who do not meet the qualifications yet can continue to earn community service hours until graduation day. Students have until the June SAT and ACT test dates to continue to try and earn the required test scores.
The application typically takes 10 minutes or less to complete. Students DO NOT need to have met the requirements prior to applying for the scholarship. As a reminder, students need qualifying GPA, SAT or ACT, and Community Service Hours in order to earn the scholarship. Any student that meets those requirements and applies will earn the scholarship.
In order to apply for State Scholarship & Grant Programs (Bright Futures), a student must first Create a Student Account/Profile at the following link: http://www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/ . Click on State Grants, Scholarships & Applications. Click on Create a Student Account. Students will receive an email with their User ID and temporary password. After creating a Profile, students will have the option to continue directly to the FFAA.

The deadline for SJVS summer course registrations is already approaching. The final date to sign up for SJVS courses is Wednesday, February 10. Students are encouraged to sign up for HOPE, Driver’s Ed and other summer courses with SJVS prior to the deadline.
