THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHT
INSIDE THE SCHOOL
Cal Butcher named Katich Award for Creativity winner
Cal Butcher, director of Media Crossroads, has been selected as this year’s winner of the J-School's Katich Award for Creativity. In announcing the award, the judges said: “The award judges are asked to keep in mind the importance of the Katich concept of challenging and helping students, and this year’s winner excelled in both of those areas at a time when students really needed faculty members to step up. He especially went above and beyond to make sure that students could have the full experience, and he helped keep the lobby of Stauffer-Flint a safe beehive of activity when the rest of the campus seemed deserted.” Congratulations, Cal!
The J-School's Diversity and Inclusion Action Group (DIAG) hosted a student panel discussing diversity at KU. The panel was moderated by Patricia Gaston, the Lacy C. Haynes Professor of Journalism. First-year student Mya Peterson and doctoral student Shola Aromona invited panelists from the Black Student Union, the Freshman Action Team, and the Graduate Students of Color Network. Based on the experiences of these students, who all identified with a racial/ethnic minority group, key takeaways from the panel included:
  • Students from diverse backgrounds and schools can face a “culture shock” at a predominantly white institution such as KU.
  • Importance of being acknowledged but not singled out. As one panelist said, “See me but don’t point me out.”
  • Appreciating instructors who establish clear rules for class discussions and implement these rules.
  • Feeling left out of discussion/feeling that their point of view does not matter as much.
  • Instructors should not assume that students know how the campus operates and should share campus resources with students.

Did you miss our National Citation award event last month featuring Martin Baron, retired executive editor of The Washington Post? A recording of the event is now available. Baron accepted the award and gave an address followed by Q&A.
