Restaurant News: New Restaurants, Boba and a Delicious Map
There's no shortage of great places to eat and drink in the District!
The Asian Art Museum opened their new restaurant, Asian Box, at the end of March. Featuring, "fast-casual, Vietnamese-influenced fare," the restaurant is open during regular museum hours.
The District is also readying to welcome two more new restaurants! First, the latest concept from the team behind the popular Burma Superstar (Burma Love) will open Teakwood at 149 Fell this spring. From Eater SF, "the new restaurant’s menu will nod to Burmese culinary traditions while also pulling from other cultures and showcasing local ingredients."
And in the former Cala space, a new restaurant from veterans of the acclaimed Sons & Daughters will open Kiln, "a Northern Californian-style tasting menu," this summer; according the SF Business Times.
If looking for something refreshing, a new Hawaiian-themed boba shop, Lilikoi, has opened in The Market. Flavors include POG!
Including many District spots, Eater SF also put out a map of delicious places to eat in Hayes Valley/Civic Center. Rolls Away After a Fun Season
And that's a wrap on the San FranDISCO Roller Rink! The fun, outdoor rink with a four-seasons roof, provided hours of fun and groovy rink time for skaters of all ages and levels. We hope you were able to get there for a few laps!

Grove Street Lighting Project in the Works |
The Grove Street Lighting Project kicked off with a nighttime walking tour of a three-block stretch of Grove Street, from Market Street to Van Ness Avenue, as the Civic Center CBD begins to explore lighting enhancements to both improve safety conditions and beautify this important corridor as a gateway to the arts. A lighting committee, comprising the many organizations and institutions along Grove Street, walked the corridor along with a local lighting designer to note specific lighting challenges as well as opportunities. The Civic Center CBD has submitted two grant applications and will seek sponsorship support to fund the design and installation of lighting for Grove Street this year.

Better Market Street Construction Updates |
Better Market Street Phase 1 Construction continued, with the completion of potholing on Market Street and the removal of 27 trees (21 in poor condition, 6 conflict with planning -- this is after they took steps to protect 90 other trees along this corridor). Bicycle detours also continue along Market Street, and current work includes installing soil cells under tree basins to improve tree health, and electrical work for the new traffic signals being installed between 5th and 8th streets. Please note (as the image to the left shows) that crosswalks may at times be temporarily closed and during this they will provide alternate crossings with temporary, ADA-compliant ramps and protected, 5 foot wide walkways on both sides of the construction zone to allow for safe passage across Market.

One of five locations, Civic Center station has recently seen the refill of the street level hatch created to add power below street level. The team is now working on the "auxiliary water main and fire hydrant which is located below the SFMTA bus boarding island at 8th & Market Street (eastbound lane). This work is taking place at night (10pm to 5am) to accommodate demolition of a portion of the boarding island. Once the main and hydrant have been replaced the bus boarding island will be restored. This work [which began at the end of February] will take approximately 6 weeks to complete." They're also working to remove stored materials from the chain-linked area near the former Chase Bank. The Brady is Looking Sharp |
SF Chronicle reporter J.K. Dineen notes the "plywood is off the retail spaces at The Brady (the Strada project on the Local 38 property at 12th and Market) and it looks fabulous. Love the mix of modern and historic."

The Kelsey Readies to Break Ground |
In mid February, the SF Board of Supervisors officially approved The Kelsey Civic Center, which when completed will have 109 apartments for adults with disabilities. The Kelsey is readying to move forward on construction and hopes to schedule a groundbreaking event soon, a delay from their projected late Spring event as they were caught up in the SVB collapse. It may only be spring, but summer programming and parades are already filling up the calendar!
Summer at SF JAZZ will feature over 100 concerts, with a robust lineup for the 40th Annual San Francisco Jazz Festival (June 7-18), and SFJAZZ Summer Sessions 2023 (July 13-August 20).
The SF Opera continues its centennial celebrations with summer programming, such as Madame Butterfly (June 3-July 1) and the 100th Anniversary Concert (June 16).
SF PRIDE returns in June, a month long celebration capped off with the PRIDE Parade & Celebration, June 24-25. The celebration takes place both days in Civic Center Plaza, and the parade is Sunday, June 25.

As part of Black History Month, Civic Center Community Ambassador Stephen M had the opportunity to read Mixed Me! by Taye Diggs to 1st graders at Tenderloin Community Elementary School.
Our Ambassadors are dedicated to connecting with the community through wayfinding assistance, social services support, evening ambassadors, and other opportunities, like this one, when they arise.

As part of the #RabbitOnParade public art project, which featured local artist decorated rabbit sculptures throughout the City, the Asian Art Museum hosted the Prosperity Rabbit: "The gold to represents wealth and prosperity, while the circular pattern on its front symbolizes fortune in the form of traditional Chinese coins and water, as 2023 is the year of the water rabbit." It hopped on to the front steps in early 2023, and hopped away in February.
