Monday, May 18th!!
At Governor Scott's Monday, May 11th press conference, he opened the spigot another 1/4 turn. This is allowing many retail businesses to reopen their doors after more than two months of closure. This does not reopen all areas of business and you should contact any operation to see what their individual status is before going to their location.
Chamber Executive Director Bernie Carr and Economic Development Officer Bill Moore held a Zoom meeting with many of the local business owners Monday evening. There was a discussion on how they could handle employee and customer safety so that there is continuity across the board. In this way, patrons will know what is expected of them when they frequent each establishment. This should help keep everyone informed and reduce surprises as access to more and more businesses continues to expand.
It was felt that erring on the side of caution was the prudent way to move forward, so that the tremendous effort put forth by the majority of Vermonters to this point was not in vain. If there is an uptick in cases and the line moves in an upward curve, Governor Scott may need to re-institute the quarantine measures that he just relaxed.
Continuing with a safe and cautious approach to expanded public interaction seemed the most prudent action.
We want to get open and stay open.

As we move forward, businesses and employees must understand that how they work is essential to resuming and maintaining business operations. Preventing outbreaks and limiting the spread of COVID-19 is the only way to avoid future business and social disruption. The success of this phased restart will depend in large part on the ability of employers and employees to adhere to the public health, safety, and social distancing measures essential to limiting the spread of illness. Also, are you someone who is at a greater risk of contracting the virus and/or unable to access your normal method of getting necessities (food, supplies, pharmacy, etc..)? If so, then you should take advantage of the wonderful volunteers that have stepped up in our community. The Brandon Free Public Library, The Brandon Area Toy Project and the Town of Brandon have partnered to provide a delivery service for people that need help getting their supplies.
How it works is simple:

Call the retailer and pay for your supplies over the phone.
2.
Let the retailer know that you are having the delivery service pick-up your items.
3.
Send an email to: delivery@townofbrandon.com with the following information: Who you are, where you ordered from, physical address for delivery, and best contact number. Or you can call Volunteer Coordinator, Colleen Wright (802) 282-6548
4.
Wait for contact from our vetted volunteer! They will let you know how/when and where it will be dropped off (safely of course with no face-to-face contact)

Senior Citizens Center

The Senior Center is closed, but we are serving the free community take out curb side pick up lunches every Friday till May 31st. Bagged lunch includes a different lunch each week with dessert included from Noon to 1:00. All are welcome.
We also are doing the monthly dinners as take out.
Brandon Area Food Shelf needs monetary donations to keep up with the food insecurities that are arising.
No pick up at food shelf. Will deliver and put outside of door. Must call me with name, phone # and address.
People will have to understand that this drop off is not their week's worth of groceries, but just "emergency assistance" and that we all have to work together to share with a hungry neighbor.

Town Hall updates
Scheduling and other info
The Friends Of The Brandon Town Hall have been busy setting up for our 2020 season. Of course the actual opening of the hall depends on town, state and National directives. We are leaning on the side of caution and have already rescheduled all our May events to other times during the season hoping that we might be able to open by the middle of June. Once there is a definite date we will begin our normal publicity with monthly ads and weekly press releases in the Reporter, Chamber of Commerce Newsletter and other local publications.
Always check our bulletin and sign boards for updates and times. In our effort to support and help our economy rebound plus let community members continue to enjoy the events at the Brandon Town Hall, all
FOTH events for the 2020 season will be Free Will Donation events,this is possible only because of the generosity of our sponsors.
At the moment we have 25 events scheduled, mostly Saturday nights, from June 13 to December 4.
We will have something for everyone: participation in the town wide celebration for the end of Seg. 6, our popular
Silent Movie series, bands, dances, puppets, theater, Mrs. America pageant, town wide events and our 7th annual
"Brandon Has Talent Show" in September.
FOTH would like to thank all those police, fire and rescue squad personnel, senior center and food shelf, workers and staff from our schools, grocery stores, health center, gas stations, businesses, restaurants, etc., that have put themselves out there to help make this pandemic a little easier to endure. Brandon is such a special place to live and work, we will rebound and be able to enjoy our brand new town.

- Copying and faxing services for the public are suspended until further notice.
- Notary Services are suspended until further notice.
- Dog licenses, tax payments, sewer payments, and records requests should all be done via mail/Credit Card online/drop boxes in front of Town Office and Neshobe school. We can mail receipts if requested.
- Records requests can be fulfilled via email or mail if a Book & Page Number is provided. You may access our records online through RecordHub https://recordhub.cottsystems.com/. Any Records Research REQUIRING access will be by appointment only, you MUST call ahead before coming to the office.

We have some good news. We are now able to provide limited opening at the Compass Center from Monday, May 18th but we have needed to make some important changes before then for your safety and welfare.
We are now trained in how to manage COVID-19 in a commercial gallery and retail setting to make sure that we do our part to keep you safe and well.
The changes
If you would like to come to visit us or shop with us we ask that for your safety you wear your face mask and that when you enter the Center you sanitiz
e your hands. Hand sanitizer will be available for your use. We also ask that you do your very best to maintain the 6 feet social distancing requirements. Our building is so large this should not be difficult. We have marked the building with blue arrows to create a one way movement through the gallery and retail areas which should also help with social distancing.
We have also revised our opening hours and after the 18th will only be open Tuesday - Friday from 10am-4pm for public access.
Opening times will be kept under review as State guidelines change. We all want to make sure that the return to normality comes as quickly and safely as possible.
We are looking forward to welcoming visitors and guessing who is behind the mask.

Our spring Art Shows have been cancelled (or postponed until late summer) so this spring we will be staying local, at home with our kids and in the studio.

Computer-EZ in Mendon is open regular hours, but customers are no longer allowed up the stairs to the shop with computers. They must leave them downstairs. They can talk with the tech from downstairs or on their phone.
Site visits will be curtailed for normally scheduled visits, but emergency/urgent computer and network needs relating to business continuation will be addressed immediately as usual. Protection of some sort must be in place on site and will be analyzed as need be.

Bar Harbor Bank & Trust Employees Donate More Than $11,000 to Local Non-Profits Helping People Impacted by COVID-19
Bar Harbor, Maine - Bar Harbor Bank & Trust is donating the proceeds collected in Q1 2020 from its employee-driven charitable giving program, Casual for a Cause, to ten non-profits providing assistance to those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. More than $11,000 is being donated through the program, which pools employee contributions collected each quarter and distributes them to non-profits selected by and voted on by the employees.
The Casual for a Cause program typically supports nonprofits focused on education and workforce development. Because of COVID-19, Bank employees choose to focus the first quarter proceeds on the increasing needs of individuals and families who have been impacted by the crisis.
"All of us at Bar Harbor Bank & Trust recognize the importance of doing all we can in this time of uncertainty and economic hardship to help our friends and neighbors," said Jack Frost, VP Director of Community Giving at Bar Harbor Bank & Trust. "We are honored to donate this quarter's proceeds from Casual for a Cause to these outstanding organizations and to support the essential services they are providing during the pandemic."
With the Casual for a Cause program, Bank employees dress casually on Fridays in exchange for a contribution to a pool of funds collected during each quarter. The employees then select and vote on the nonprofits to receive their contributions. Since the program began in 2018, employees have donated nearly $75,000 to nonprofits across Northern New England.

RNESU update
Schools, teachers, students &
parents
The governor has mandated all schools in Vermont to close as of March 18 through the remainder of the school year. He indicated a decision about end of year celebrations such as graduations will be decided around May 8. He also gave three goals during that closure: feed children, provide child care for essential personnel, and provide continuity of learning. So what are our schools doing?
RNESU school buildings are closed but learning is open for business! We have begun distance learning and have sent the first round of packets home last week. For the remainder of the school year, students will receive work either by mail or bus delivery or digitally and will be able to finish their work for the year.
One concern we have with distance learning is the inability to reach every student through the internet. We have loaned out over 350 Chromebooks. However, lack of broadband access in parts of our community is a concern. About 24% of our students lack access. For those students, we are creating paper packets.
We have started weekend meal delivery as of last Friday, April 24. On Friday we delivered over 4500 meals to cover thee days of food. Monday through Thursday we deliver about 1500 meals. We are still in need of cooler donations. If anyone has a cooler they are willing to donate, please bring it to the Markowski Field House behind OVUHS and leave it there.
Child Care for children of Essential Employees is still happening, thanks to our private partner A.R.K.
All of our employees are working, whether it be meal delivery, custodial work, delivery of education or making of packets for education. Schools are closed and we are working remotely. Email or phone messages are the best ways to reach the schools.
Board meetings are held virtually. Information on how to access a board meeting is found in the calendar invite on the district web page. As it changes each meeting, that is the best way to track down information on how to access it. We are recording meetings and giving them to PEG TV to air, but we are not streaming live (at least not at this time). Minutes are posted within 5 days on the district website board page.
The week of May 4 is Teacher Appreciation Week for the schools. I want to thank all of our staff who are working hard to serve our students and families. We appreciate the support the community has given us, as our school buses drive around the district to drop off meals. We are in this together and will keep figuring things out!
Who is working?
- Our custodians continue to clean the schools and are shifting into some summer projects while the buildings are empty.
- Teachers and counselors, with the help of paraprofessionals, are connecting with students via technology or phone.
- Paras are also helping with meal delivery, custodial services and a variety of smaller projects that are needed at this time.
- Admin assistants, administrators and central office have moved to remote work to continue to support the work of the district and support families. The best way to reach us is by phone, email or the Let's Talk button on any school or our district website.
As others have noted: the buildings may be closed but our hearts are open. Stay well.
