July Volunteer Spotlight: David Detrisac

Congratulations to Medicare Medicaid Assistance Program (MMAP) volunteer, David! David shares a bit about himself and why he volunteers with MMAP:

"I am a retired physician. I attended the University of Michigan and earned my BS in Chemical engineering, a MS in Bioengineering, and a medical degree. I did a 5 year orthopedic residency at the University of Cincinnati. I then joined East Lansing Orthopedics, an orthopedic group in greater Lansing. Besides my practice, I wrote a couple of articles and co-wrote a book on shoulder arthroscopy. I served as President of the Michigan Orthopedic Society. I retired in September 2019, just prior to the pandemic. I have been a contact tracer for Michigan and was a vaccinator for the Ingham County Health Department. I am active in the TCOA-AARP Foundation Tax Aide program. I am interested in 'going solar' and we are building a solar system for our church and I am investigating solar for our home. I am also treasurer of The Harris Nature Center Foundation.

I met my wife at U of M and was married in 1974. We worked together in the office and she is active in the community and at church. We have 3 children, all of whom graduated from U of M. Our oldest is a naval architect for the US Navy. My second son earned a MS in Aerospace Engineering and is now working on G. M. electric trucks. Our daughter earned a BS in architecture and helps build electric substations around our country.

I became interested in the MMAP program as I learned that navigating Medicare when one retires is so different than traditional health insurance and the choices and procedures are not clear. I also have seen, while doing tax preparation at TCOA-AARP Tax Aide, many low income people who are unable to navigate the Medicaid program. My goal is to help these citizens.
