Research, Publications and Presentations
Doctoral student Muhammad Ittefaq co-authored a book chapter titled “Health and Safety Risks to Journalists During Pandemics,” which has been published in Handbook of Research on Discrimination, Gender Disparity, and Safety Risks in Journalism by IGI Global. The other co-authors are Sayyed Fawad Ali Shah at Jacksonville State University and Faizullah Jan at University of Peshawar.

Doctoral student Harrison M. Rosenthal’s article “Speech Imperialization? Situating American Parrhesia in an Isegoria World” was published in the International Journal for the Semiotics of Law. Read the article here. Rosenthal thanks Associate Dean Charles W. Marsh Jr. for assisting with the paper’s theoretical explication and organization and for his years of tutelage — from JOUR 101 to JOUR 999.

Sophia Misle’s University Daily Kansan story “‘Less motivated': KU students struggle with mental health during a no-break semester” was featured in a New York Times roundup of college media coverage of the pandemic.
Photojournalism class creates book documenting the pandemic
This semester’s Journalism 410 Photojournalism class teamed up to create a book of photographs from KU and Lawrence throughout this extraordinary semester. The book, “The New Normal: A Semester at KU Amid the Coronavirus in 2020,” is available to purchase through advance orders. The photographs come from projects focused on student life, the pandemic and the election. Students wanted to document this history, with each photograph telling a different story from this memorable year. The book project is entirely student led, with each member of the class taking on a different position in designing, planning, writing and editing the book. All proceeds from the book will benefit the scholarship funds for the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

J-School scholarship application is open now
Each year, we accept applications for School of Journalism scholarships. All students admitted to the J-School are encouraged to apply. Last year, we distributed more than $600,000 to our students. Students who receive KU renewable scholarships should note that the School of Journalism will likely be funding those scholarships during their junior and senior years. Even so, additional funds may be available, so those students can still apply. Applications are due Dec. 15. Recipients will be notified in April 2021, and scholarships are for the Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 academic year.
Watch this video to learn more about the scholarships.
Apply here (click the red Sign In button at the top, then log in with your KU online ID and password). You may be asked to complete a general application question before moving to the School of Journalism Undergraduate Scholarship Application.
