All are welcome!
UUCSC does not presently have a minister. If you are in need of pastoral services please contact any member of the Pastoral Care Committee. Rev. Betty Kornitzer, UUCSC Minister Emerita, is working with the committee and if professional ministerial support is needed, she will be called in.  Please do not contact the Minister directly.

"Wisdom and Compassion
in Zen Buddhism"

Reverend David Shunyo Caruso, PhD

Reverend David Shunyo Caruso, PhD, is an ordained Zen Buddhist priest who has been practicing Zen meditation for over 50 years. A founding member of UUCSC, David returns to South County to speak about Wisdom and Compassion in Zen Buddhism. His sermon will focus on the intersection of the Buddha’s teachings over 2,500 years ago and the findings of modern brain science. The rather astonishing alignment of ancient wisdom and current science reveals how we can live a life of kindness, compassion, and peace.

Covenant and Quilting

It's time to create our RE covenant! What kind of place and space are we creating here together? What are the promises that we make to each other in order to create that kind of place? What happens when we make mistakes?

Once we brainstorm these ideas for our covenant, we will begin to sew our identity quilt together and then add our agreements around the border of our quilt.

If you haven't made a quilt square, you can jump right in anytime!

Breaking News: First Afghan Evacuees to Arrive in RI
Excerpted from Beautiful Day Newsletter

The first Afghan evacuees will be arriving in Rhode Island next week. Until Wednesday, no one knew when they would be coming or how many at a time. Now it's clear that 5-6 families will arrive each week until March with most of them coming from Fort Dix, a military base in New Jersey. We're expecting about 250 Afghans in total. The new arrivals will be met by representatives from Dorcas International Institute or the Diocese of Rhode Island, the two agencies responsible for resettling refugees in the State. Also present will be Afghans who have been living in Rhode Island for a while and can welcome them in their own language. The evacuees will be brought to their new homes, which have been rented and furnished for them ahead of time, and a small celebration will most likely follow with a meal of traditional foods. Then the process of adjusting to life in Rhode Island will begin.

From the President
I particularly enjoyed last Sunday’s service with its explanation of the beautiful holiday of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) by Jesús De la Torre, a teacher in the South Kingstown School District. He pointed out the significance of all the elements in the colorful ofrenda he displayed and shared related stories and traditions. I missed some of his words, though, as I was sitting in the very back of the sanctuary. I was happy to be able to watch it again, online. If you were not in attendance or you missed a few words, watch the recording HERE.

As summer seems to have finally come to an end, we have looked for ways to keep us all connected. To this end the Board has decided to reopen the building to small groups. While we will keep our Covid Safety Plan in effect for Sunday services, a new Covid Policy for Outside Groups and Small Church Groups has been created. All meetings or gatherings held in our building should follow these rules and must be scheduled with our Congregational Administrator, Sara. If you are interested in having your committee meet in the Oneto Room, please read the policy carefully. Note the carry in/carry out provision. No trash or recyclables are to be left behind.

Can you think of other ways to stay connected, especially for those who are uncomfortable coming to Sunday services? Please be in touch with any of the members of the Board and let us know your ideas. With Halloween behind us we move into the season of Gratitude and Thanks. I know I am thankful for this community and we on the Board want to keep you all as connected as possible.

From Barbara Holtzman, Adult Ed Committee Chair...

Based on the responses from my inquiry about Adult Education needs that you have, I've decided that I will shift my role from planning education events to sharing different online offerings via this newsletter, the first of which is
this 'Hope Summit' from Sounds True. NOTE: Jane Goodall's presentation will have already passed by the time you receive this newsletter but there are other inspiring speakers this weekend (Each is available for free for only 24 Hours)

Please share any findings of adult education interest with the newsletter editor to be included here. Thank you Larry Kelland for initiating a book group. If you missed it last week, you can find the information HERE.
