On May 6, 2023, the University of California, Irvine School of Law held its 12th commencement ceremony, celebrating the graduation of 131 J.D., 25 Global LL.M., and 12 Graduate Tax LL.M. students. The event featured a keynote address from the Honorable Philip S. Gutierrez, Chief United States District Court Judge, Central District of California.
At least 24 percent of the J.D. class of 2023 were the first in their families to graduate college or law school. The graduating J.D. class participated in more than 10,500 hours of pro bono work during their three years of law school, and over 92 percent of the class participated in pro bono work. We are so proud of our graduates!

A delegation from the University of California, Irvine School of Law, recently visited South Korea to strengthen ties with the Korean legal community. The delegation, led by Dean and Chancellor’s Professor of Law Austen Parrish, included Assistant Dean, Chief Global and Executive Programs Officer Khary Hornsby, Professional Development Advisor, Global Programs Grace Lee, Professor Stephen Lee, Professor Ji Seon Song, and two of our J.D. students, who are Korea Law Center Fellows.

As part of the Innocence OC Pro Bono Project led by Annee Della Donna, nearly 50 UCI Law students worked over the course of eight years to successfully overturn the wrongful murder convictions for Juan Rayford and Dupree Glass. Two UCI Law students were present in court for the ruling on April 20.

The university-wide accolade LEAD recognizes key leaders, graduate students, staff and faculty who support and champion student success and research excellence in the Latinx community at UCI and in Orange County. Cindy is one of only 15 graduate students from across the entire UCI campus to receive this honor.

As part of our Ninth Circuit Appellate Litigation Clinic, recent UCI Law graduates, Roy Bendavid and Nicole Tackabery, researched, briefed and argued a complex immigration/asylum case before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Alexandre v. Garland, under the supervision of Clinic Co-Director Peter Afrasiabi, and against the United States Attorney General.

The UCI Law Civil Rights Litigation Clinic and Criminal Justice Clinic won a major appellate victory in a case filed in February 2021 on behalf of local taxpayers against Orange County and Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer.

Chaired by UCI Law Prof. Carrie Hempel, the Association of American Law Schools Conference on Clinical Legal Education, “Hope as a Discipline,” featured several preeminent UCI Law clinical faculty, including Profs. Sameer Ashar, Annie Lai, Jane Stoever and Katie Tinto.

UCI Law faculty research the most important issues of the day, from the radically new challenges in intellectual property to the changing nature of the legal profession, the impacts of climate change, dispute resolution, the protection of consumers in economic crisis, the interaction of international and national law, and much more.

Q&A with Vladmir L'Ouverture
LL.M. Tax '20
Vladimir graduated from UCI Law’s Graduate Tax Program in May 2020. Since then, he’s been working in New York City at PricewaterhouseCoopers, specializing in Mergers and Acquisitions Tax. Vladimir grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which is also where he met his wife, Caitlin. To pass the time, they enjoy movie nights at home, going to the beach and taking mini road trips in the surrounding northeast area.

Q: How did UCI Law prepare you for your legal practice?
UCI Law, specifically the Graduate Tax Program, prepared me for practice by giving me a plethora of skill sets not offered in other graduate tax programs. For example, in addition to the standard tax courses, we were offered tax clinics, tax externships, accounting, Excel, and Alteryx and Tableau (visualization software) courses. These courses offer exposure to what tax lawyers will see in the practice in ways no other programs currently match.
Q: What do you like best about your work?
I work at PricewaterhouseCoopers in NYC, specializing in M&A Tax. What I like best about my work is that I constantly face new challenges and improve my practice. The variety of tax structures and sections of the tax code I work with on a consistent basis means I get to learn something new every day.
Q: What was the best part about being a student at UCI Law?
Definitely the professors and my classmates. It felt so communal. We would regularly socialize with the professors outside of class. I still communicate with (and visit) many of my classmates to this day, and I consider them close friends. All of this is accentuated when taking into account we only had one semester together in person (COVID made most of our second semester virtual). Also, having the beach about 10 minutes away was a plus!
Q: How do you stay involved with the UCI Law community?
Since graduating in 2020, I’ve had a couple of opportunities to participate in UCI Law in NYC; organized by Professor Blank, which allows current students and alumni interested in practicing in the Big Apple an opportunity to network with one another. Further, I often communicate with UCI Law students interested in working in NYC, providing them thoughts on my experience, tips and what to expect. Any UCI Law students looking to work in NYC can always reach out to me on LinkedIn!
