MEET THE TEAM: KATRINA GUTIERREZ, DISABILITY RETIREMENT ANALYST

Katrina started her law career in 2013 when she served as a legal assistant to several law offices in Ventura County. Over the last few years, her employment as a legal and judicial assistant has taken her to numerous places such as Elkhart Prosecuting Attorney’s Office in Indiana, Ventura Superior Court, and Santa Barbara Superior Court. Her journey with the County of Santa Barbara started in March 2017 and continued in May 2022 as she started her adventure with SBCERS as a Disability Retirement Analyst.

What do you get asked the most by SBCERS members?

The most common question I get asked by members is “Do I qualify for disability retirement?” In return, I would follow up with these questions: 1) Are you substantially unable to perform the usual duties of your job? 2) Is this incapacity permanent? and 3) Did the incapacity arise out of the course of your employment with the County? Once I receive the answers to those questions, I can better assess whether a member should file a disability retirement application. If you have any questions regarding disability retirement, please contact us at (877) 568‐2940.

What have you enjoyed the most since starting at SBCERS?

SBCERS is a unique county department, in that it is a smaller, more intimate setting than I am used to, which I absolutely love! Every member is shown appreciation and treated with the utmost respect. I am very appreciative to have been given the opportunity to work for such an amazing organization.

What do you do on your free time?

When I have a moment of free time, you can find me spending time with my family and friends. However, most of my time outside of work is divided between going to school for my Master’s degree, planning a wedding, and working a part-time job.

POST-RETIREMENT EMPLOYMENT WITH AN SBCERS PLAN SPONSOR

If you plan on working as Extra-Help, Contractor on Payroll, or Independent Contractor at an SBCERS Plan Sponsor after retirement, please know you are subject to rules and restrictions even if the new work position is in a different capacity from your original occupation.

To confirm eligibility for post-retirement employment with an SBCERS employer, please see the guidelines and forms linked below.
