Serving Individuals with Disabilities
In 1987, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation designating March as National Disability Awareness Month. The proclamation created a special opportunity to raise awareness about the support needed by persons with disabilities as well as their right to enjoy life and to feel productive and secure.

Gardant operates two affordable assisted living communities that are designed to serve adults with disabilities who are 22 to 64 years of age at time of application/admission.

Physical Exercise and Parkinson’s Disease
Physical exercise can help improve the symptoms and quality of life for individuals suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

Learning about Supportive Living
Two newly elected state senators and a newly elected state representative visited Gardant-managed communities to learn about the Illinois Supportive Living program, which is a model for affordable assisted living. Senator Paul Faraci visited Bowman Estates of Danville; Senator Erica Harriss visited Cambridge House of Maryville; and Rep. Jed Davis visited Heritage Woods of Yorkville.
Consequences of Being Socially Frail
Not being socially active and not having close relationships with others pose numerous health risks for older adults. They include an increased risk of falling, disability, hospitalization, poor surgical outcomes, needing nursing home care, and even earlier death.

Statewide Wii Bowling and Spelling Bee Competition
After being on a hiatus due to COVID, the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition is resuming its Wii Bowling and Spelling Bee competition. Teams of residents from Supportive Living communities from around the state will be competing for the opportunity to qualify for the finals in Springfield, Illinois in October.
Walking and Your Heart
Every 500 additional steps taken daily by older adults is associated with a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, and heart failure, says the American Heart Association.

Day at the Capitol
Julie Simpkins and Rick Banas of Gardant participated in the Indiana Health Care Association/Indiana Center for Assisted Living’s Legislative Day at the state Capitol. Gardant catered the luncheon for the event.
Prevalence of Alzheimer’s
According to a report posted on the CNN Health website, the Alzheimer’s Association expects the number of older adults with Alzheimer’s disease in the U.S. to double over the next two decades.
