Message from Cheng Dong, head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering

Greetings again from Penn State,

Thank you for reading our latest edition of the Penn State Biomedical Engineering newsletter. I invite you to take note of our remembrance of the late David Geselowitz, who passed away Aug. 22 at the age of 90. He was a founding chair of the first Penn State bioengineering program long before the current Department of Biomedical Engineering was established. He was also a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a recognition of his outstanding contributions of engineering theory and technology to electrocardiographic fundamentals and diagnoses.

This edition also highlights our work in a relatively unexplored field by the biomedical engineering world: mental health. In this edition, you will also read about our faculty's new accomplishments and stories highlighting our recent research. In addition, we are sharing five fantastic student stories, including how our graduate students are tackling COVID-19 from various angles while strengthening their research skills. Finally, I invite you to join us for the rest of our seminars, detailed below, which are being held virtually this semester.

As always, I enjoyed the messages I received from you, especially how you are harnessing the potential of biomedical engineering to be a force for societal good. I look forward to seeing you again, either virtually or in person, when that's possible again.

Sincerely,

Cheng Dong

Mental Health
Brain thickness and connectivity, not just location, correlates with behavior

Most people think of the brain as divided into regions that are each responsible for different functions, such as language and fine motor skills. A new study by Penn State researchers suggests that there's more to the story. >>

The National Institutes of Health awarded Penn State researchers a $1.85 million grant to develop a new way to test if dysfunctions in certain areas of the brain lead to mental health complications and brain disorders. >>
Faculty and Research News

Cheng Dong, head of the Penn State Department of Biomedical Engineering and distinguished professor of biomedical engineering, has been elected to the International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering. >>

Jian Yang, professor of biomedical engineering and Lloyd & Dorothy Foehr Huck Chair in Regenerative Engineering at Penn State, was named a fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES). >>
BME faculty among women featured in podcast about cryo-EM research

The latest episode of The Symbiotic Podcast features the bleeding-edge research of three Penn State scientists, including Cameron Varano and Deborah Kelly, at the University's best-in-class cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) facility. >>

The National Institutes of Health awarded Penn State biomedical engineering and University of Akron researchers a $2 million grant to develop a novel implant patch that can release protein drugs as needed for improved treatment of coronary heart disease. >>

A unique nanoparticle to deliver a localized cancer treatment inhibits tumor growth in mice, according to a team of Penn State researchers.
The nanoparticles, developed by Daniel Hayes, associate professor of biomedical engineering, have a specific chemistry that allows a microRNA (miRNA) to attach to it>>

Fighting COVID-19 gives graduate students invaluable research experience

When the COVID-19 pandemic began to sweep across the world, many researchers shifted focus to fight the virus. Penn State's research community was no exception, and this included biomedical engineering graduate students. >>
Biomedical engineering doctoral student receives NSF-funded internship

Yue "Lilly" Yan, a Penn State doctoral student in biomedical engineering, has been selected to participate in the National Science Foundation Internships for Graduate Students (INTERN) program. The award will support a five-month internship experience with spotLESS Materials, a Penn State spin-out company. >>
Biomedical engineering graduate student receives Blue Flame Award

Lauren Randolph, a graduate research assistant in biomedical engineering at Penn State, has received the Blue Flame Award, given by Addgene, a non-profit plasmid repository.
