Gary's Corner...

August is here, but here in east Texas, there’s no way August can be worse than July as far as temperatures go. I’ve been spoiled these last few summers in east Texas rarely seeing a triple digit day, but July had more triple digit days than not. Our long-range forecast calls for a mild August mostly in the mid-90’s. I sure hope the forecasters are right on this one.

Fishing has been pretty solid even with our high temps and almost no rain. Most of our reservoirs are down in Texas and down being mostly 6-10 feet. In my area of Texas, that is a lot. It seems so weird when I try to tell people that in the west some of our lakes may be down 100-200 feet or more. Many just can’t believe a lake can be down 200 feet and still have 400 feet or more water in it, but the western reservoirs are deep. They’re built in deep canyons so they hold a lot of water. Here in Texas, we simply don’t have the terrain for deep lakes so they just make them really big bodies of water.

Fishing is in full blown summer mode, with no real changes from my July newsletter. The last week of July there was a kids’ fishing camp put on at Lake Fork. This is their 15th year and it’s simply called Camp Bass at Lake Fork TX. There were 34 kids from all over the great USA. I was surprised at how far some of these kids traveled. There were about a dozen states mentioned and I remember some but not all of them, so I’ll pass on mentioning states. The kids made a trip to the Dobyns warehouse for a visit on the 26th of July. I had a great time with these young and energetic anglers. They fish with pros and guides for 3 straight mornings, and there are some awards handed out as well. This was a great time for the anglers and their coaches, as well as the Dobyns staff. Anyone looking for more info can go to CAMP BASS.

We finally have our new sun shirts in stock, they'll be available on the website soon. These are a completely different shirt than we’ve ever had. They have a mesh like breathable back and underarm area. These are very nice shirts. They’re available in many colors with different logo colors. They’re SPF 50+ rated and available in short sleeve, long sleeve, and also a hoodie style sun shirt. I’ve received a lot of calls wanting a hooded sun shirt so we’re trying to make what anglers are asking for. We’ve also added 5 more models of our popular Ultimate Casting rods commonly referred to as BFS rods. These are in stock as well. We’ve just received another round of our casting and spinning reels and they’re doing very well. Thanks guys!!!! Anyone looking for info please check these out at www.dobynsrods.com

I’m looking forward to fall fishing but in the meantime, fish early and late, stay hydrated, and send me some fish pics.

Reehm’s Surprise Swimbait Stick

After representing Dobyns Rods for well over a decade -- and competing and guiding over 200 days a year during that span – Louisiana pro Clark Reehm has a pretty good grasp on which tools serve him best. That’s why he’s shocked to see that so few of his peers regularly mention the Champion XP Series DC 706CB, a heavy action 7-foot rod that does a lot of things well.

He especially likes it when the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit goes North to smallmouth country, in particular when he’s fishing a smaller soft plastic swimbait like a 3.3 Keitech.

“It’s actually designed as a crankbait rod,” he said, noting the ‘CB’ designation. “But it just has the perfect bend and give for those smallmouths, and for southern spotted bass, too. When they bite, it gives them just enough time to take the bait in, and once they’re hooked it won’t overpower them if they decide to come up and jump. I’m surprised that more people don’t talk about it. With 12 lb. test Seaguar InvisX and that lighter wire hook, it keeps a consistent load on the fish so you end up landing more of them.”

While recent trips to smallmouth country have the finesse swimbaits on his mind, he noted that the rod has other uses, too. He’ll use it for “beefier square bills” like 2.5 and 3.5 sized models, as well as for ripping lipless crankbaits out of the grass. “It’s also great for smaller walking topwaters like a Spook Jr. or a Sammy. It’s got just enough tip to work them right and keep fish hooked, but it’s not quite as limber as most crankbait rods.”

He said the Champion Series is his absolute favorite “given the sensitivity and clean look”.  Check out this awesome 7.3 pound bass he caught on the Champion XP Series DC 736CBDC 736CB GLASSGLASS rod. Nice bass Dylan!

No Rod, No Reel, Jones Still Catches Monsters

Dobyns Rods Pro Josh Jones has been catching some giants lately, no rod or reel required. Noodling(fishing for catfish using one's bare hands) is practiced primarily in the southern United States.

The Oklahoma lake record catfish that was caught by noodling weighed 87.85lbs. A typical weight for a flathead catfish caught by noodling is 40 lbs.

Incentives To Travel To Fish

As we’ve detailed in this newsletter previously, Pete Robbins, a longtime friend of Gary Dobyns, leads fishing trips around the globe with his wife Hanna. They’ve taken bass anglers to Mexico for years, but now they’ve added trips to Alaska, Canada, Guatemala and Panama as well.

“As a thank you to Gary and the team for their support, I’d like to offer all of you a special opportunity,” Hanna said. “For any Dobyns team member who books a trip with me for the first time, or refers someone who books a trip with me for the first time, I’ll send you a $100 Tackle Warehouse gift card for your effort.”

She’s always happy to explain the attributes of the different lodges and fisheries. Lake El Salto and Lake Picachos are the most common bookings, but the saltwater trips in particular are gaining steam. Their next trip is to Panama in November for tuna, mahi, roosterfish and billfish, and there are still a couple of spaces left.

“I’ll up the ante,” Pete said. “For anyone who books for Panama, or refers an eventual client, I’ll add in a Yamamoto tackle pack.”

New Models In The Sierra Ultra Finesse Series

The Sierra Ultra Finesse series was built strictly due to angler request and the growing popularity of BFS fishing. Ultra-Light bass fishing has become very popular over the last few years and we have heard from our anglers to bring back an Ultra-Light Finesse casting rod designed to throw baits as light as 1/16th oz (1.5g) and using 2-8lb line to target bass, panfish, crappie and trout.
