Dear Sato Supporter,

When I started The Sato Project 10 Years ago this month, I had no idea what the future would bring. All I knew was that I wanted to look my beloved sato, Boom Boom, in the eye every day and know that I was doing everything I could to help the hundreds of thousands of her Puerto Rican cousins that desperately awaited help.

Since our founding, thanks to supporters like you, we have grown into a global community of sato advocates committed to ensuring that the abandoned dogs of Puerto Rico are never forgotten. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being in our sato corner and making The Sato Project possible.

As the holiday season approaches, we are also excited to share several ways you can include satos in your gift-giving. From t-shirts to coffee, keep reading for gift ideas that also give back to the dogs of Puerto Rico.

In gratitude,

-- Chrissy Beckles, President & Founder

10 Years of Saving Lives:
The Story & Impact of Our #SatoStrong Community
Our special edition 10th Anniversary Program Report is now online. Read about our impact that you've helped make possible.
This month marks 10 Years since The Sato Project was founded. On November 29th, 2011, The Sato Project officially gained its 501c(3) status and took its first step in becoming the powerful community we are today. Our Founder and President, Chrissy Beckles, had already been independently rescuing satos from Dead Dog Beach and volunteering with other organizations on the island for several years prior. However, she wanted to do more. She wanted to build a community that would help her rescue more than just one dog at a time and make an even bigger impact. In order to do that, she would need to build something bigger than herself. In 10 years, we have flown over 6,000 dogs to loving homes on the mainland US, spay/neutered and vaccinated over 7,500 animals and distributed 136K lbs of disaster relief supplies across the island in the wake of Puerto Rico's multiple natural disasters.

Want to learn about more of The Sato Project’s story and the life-changing impact that you, our #satostrong community, helped achieve? This report tells the story of how we were founded, shares details on the evolution of our programs, and celebrates the stories of some of the animals and people we have helped.

Thank you for helping us fight for the dogs of Puerto Rico and save lives every day for 10 years. We would not be here without you.

Donations in honor of a loved one can go a long way to support our life-saving rescue efforts in Puerto Rico and we are honored to continue our work in the name of your friends, family and colleagues. There are several ways to give your loved ones the gift of helping a dog start a new life:

  • Send an E-Card: Make a donation in honor of someone and we will send them an email with the image above notifying them of your generous gift.
  • Mail a Card: Prefer to have us mail a card on your behalf? For any gift of $25 or more, we will mail a loved one a card acknowledging your gift.
  • Order a Pack of Gift Cards: Need heartfelt stocking stuffers or gifts for dog-loving coworkers? Order a pack of donation gift cards! Each $100 gift pack comes with 5 cards to customize and share, letting honorees know that we will be helping even more dogs in their name.

Oliver's Howling Success
Top: Oliver was found abandoned on the side of the road near the entry of Dead Dog Beach. Bottom: now he has two loving parents by his side who dote on his every need.
While growing up, Morgan always wanted a dog. When he approached his mom about getting one, she told him he could get a fish. If he proved that he could take care of the fish and keep it alive, then she would consider his request for a dog. Morgan put so much love and dedication into that fish that it ended up living for 10 years, up until Morgan was 17. When it passed away, he re-approached his mom about finally getting a dog; however, she told him it was too late. Morgan would likely be going off to college in a few years and wouldn’t be able to care for the dog in a dorm room. Sadly, Morgan’s dream would have to wait.

Fast forward roughly 10 years later: after fostering dogs and loving lots of other people’s dogs, Morgan and his partner Amanda (who did grow up with dogs) decided they were finally ready to adopt a dog of their very own. They found out about The Sato Project through one of our other adopters (our sato superstar Champ, who was rescued at the end of 2019, is now their cousin) and knew they wanted a special sato who needed a home too.

Morgan saw one photo of Oliver and knew right away that he was the dog he had been waiting for. His sweet, happy face immediately spoke to him. He didn’t even know Oliver’s full story yet.

Our rescue team found young Oliver abandoned near the entry to Dead Dog Beach at the end of August. He was hungry, had worms, and mange. After his adoption was already finalized, Oliver had some additional health concerns come up, likely from his rough start and poor nutrition. However, Morgan and Amanda never swayed for a second that Oliver was meant to be theirs and stayed committed. Our team is so grateful that Oliver found his way to such loving and understanding parents who remained by his side.

Oliver took his Freedom Flight last month and when he arrived at the airport, it was love at first sight all around. As soon as he landed in Amanda’s arms, Oliver covered both of his new parents’ faces in loving sato kisses.

Oliver has been renamed Moose, and Morgan says that Moose is the most perfect dog he could have ever imagined: “He is the best and we are so thankful he is ours!!!”
Moose (f.k.a Oliver) settled right in with his parents as soon as he arrived. His dad, Morgan, waited his whole life to have a dog of his own. Now that his dream has finally come true, he says that Moose is everything he imagined owning a dog would be, and more.
The Sato Project is dedicated to rescuing abused and abandoned dogs in Puerto Rico, where there are an estimated 500,000 stray dogs and a combined euthanasia rate of 94% across all municipal shelters. In 10 years, we have rescued nearly 6,000 dogs, rehabilitated them with the highest standards of veterinary care, and found them loving homes on the mainland U.S.. We are also working to make permanent change on the island through community outreach and a Spay, Neuter, Vaccinate and Microchip Program.
"We fight so the dogs of Puerto Rico don't have to."
