2023 Volume: Edition 3

To our Sport for Life champions,

Innovation never ends.

As an organization, we believe in the Japanese concept of Kaizen – which means relentless improvement, even when it’s hard. When it comes to improving the quality sport and physical literacy ecosystem, there’s always new organizations, new participants, and new challenges to face.

In this eNewsletter, we’re sharing stories from all over the globe – whether highlighting our work in Bermuda or promoting the exciting opportunities coming up in New York City for our International Physical Literacy Conference. You can learn about our move toward more inclusive language with our New to Canada Participants' resource, hear the latest about our country-wide Summit tour and read about the exciting work being done in White Rock South Surrey to address mental health in young hockey players as part of our Physical Literacy for Communities initiative. Finally, we’re celebrating the upcoming World Health Day and highlighting the educational work of QuaverEd.

Move for Life champions hockey mental health support initiative

White Rock hockey players will receive innovative mental health support following a community tragedy, thanks to the financial support of Peace Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation’s Move for Life project

According to Semiahmoo Ravens U18 head coach Josh Daley, this support is coming at a critical time.

“The game and culture of hockey hasn’t changed too much over the years, but the mental and emotional weight that youth players must carry today has,” said Daley.

“Increased online activity, and post-pandemic stressors add to youth’s risk of experiencing bullying, racism, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues.”
