Last night, Mayor and Council reconvened after a month of no meetings, and what a night it was! We honored the best of the best in many ways here in Palmetto Bay.

September has been designated as National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month to honor those children whose lives have been lost and those irrevocably impacted by this terrible illness, and to strengthen the nation’s resolve to search for a cure. Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among U.S. children between infancy and 15 years of age, and one in every 285 children will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 20.
This disease not only affects the child diagnosed with cancer, but also their entire support network of devoted parents, grandparents, loved ones and friends. The Village of Palmetto Bay recognizes the devastating impact that this disease has on members of our community and the importance of increased research on Childhood Cancer and local organizations like the Mystic Force Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity dedicated to raising awareness and desperately needed funds for Childhood Cancer Research while keeping children in treatment as happy as possible.
One way to commemorate Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the Mystic Force Foundation is hosting their 4th Annual Childhood Cancer Police Car Initiative on September 18, 2021, where at least one police car from every city in Miami-Dade County adorned with Gold Ribbon wrappings, decals, or magnets will show support to the littlest Heroes as a united force. Therefore, we proclaim the month of September 2021 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. We urge the members of the community to support attend and participate in the 4th Annual Childhood Cancer Police Car Initiative to represent and raise awareness of the children battling cancer.

Hispanic and Latino Americans represent significant and fast-growing demographic in the Village of Palmetto Bay, and we honor the invaluable ways they contribute to our great Village.
The Mayor, together with the Village Council, proclaimed the month of September as National Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month in the Village of Palmetto Bay. We encourage our community to join us in celebrating the great contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to our Village, state, and nation.

National surveys and research studies report that one in three families struggles with diaper need, and 48 percent of families delay changing a diaper to extend the available supply, and infants and toddlers go through six to 12 diapers each day during the two to three years they wear diapers.
Palmetto Bay is proud to be home to trusted community-based organizations that recognize the importance of diapers in ensuring health and providing economic stability for families and thus distribute diapers to families through various channels. These diaper banks and their staff and volunteers continue to serve on the front lines of Palmetto Bay COVID-19 pandemic response helping families in our community's weather the crisis.
Without enough diapers, babies and toddlers risk infections and health problems that may require medical attention resulting in medical costs, and parents may be prevented from accessing childcare needed to go to work or school, thereby destabilizing the family’s economic prospects and well-being.
The Mayor and Village Council proclaim the week of September 27 through October 3rd, 2021, as: NATIONAL DIAPER NEED AWARENESS WEEK in the Village of Palmetto Bay. The Village is thankful for the Miami Diaper Bank, their staff, volunteers and donors, for their courageous service during the crises, and encourage the citizens of Palmetto Bay to donate generosity to diaper banks, diaper drives, and support those organizations that collect and distribute diapers to families struggling with diaper need, so that all of Palmetto Bay children and families can thrive and reach their full potential.

National Alliance on Mental Illness
|
|
September is also Suicide Prevention Month . Suicide is the leading cause of death in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 47,500 Americans die by suicide every year. Read that again. Upsetting, right? One way you can help lower this statistic is to talk about it. Having open conversations about mental health and emotional struggles helps reduce the stigma – which is what prevents a lot of people from seeking the help they need.
- 130 Americans die EVERY DAY by suicide
- More teens die by suicide than by cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, flu and lung disease COMBINED
- Suicide ranks no.2 as the cause of death for age groups between 10-34, ranks no.4 as the cause of death for age groups between 35-44 and ranks no. 5 for the age group between 45-54
- Rates of suicide are highest for American Indian, followed by White, Non-Hispanic males
The Village of Palmetto Bay commends the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) organization for its free programs such as support groups, peer mentoring programs, outreach and educational classes designed to combat the stigma of mental health and raising funds.

ZERO Prostate Cancer Organization
|
|
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in American men. About one in nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. According to the American Cancer Society, there will be about 174,650 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed (4,060 in Alabama) and about 31,620 deaths from prostate cancer in the United States during the year 2019.
September is also National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, i n hopes of increasing public awareness of the importance of prostate health and screenings, educating about risk factors and symptoms, and advocating for further research on prostate health issues.
As with any type of cancer, there are several risk factors associated with prostate cancer, including family history, race, and diet, but the most common factor is age. Prostate cancer occurs mainly in older men. About six in ten cases are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older, and it is rare before age 40. The average age at the time of diagnosis is about 66.
While there are a lot of risk factors for prostate cancer, there are also good survival statistics associated with the disease. Survival rates for prostate cancer are very high. More than 2.9 million men in the United States who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point are still alive today.
The Village of Palmetto Bay would like to recognize The ZERO organization for their fight to end prostate cancer. ZERO is a leading nonprofit who's vision is "Generation ZERO- the first generation of men free from prostate cancer."

On June 24, 2021, a devastating tragedy occurred when the Surfside building collapsed. A tragedy that forever impacted the nation. The Village of Palmetto Bay would like to recognize City of Coral Gables Battalion Chief Jason Barger, Palmetto Bay's own, Sergeant Angie Berry and Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue's Firefighter Steven Colon for their heroic response efforts at the Surfside building collapse. They were among the handful selected to be part of providing support and guidance to others in need of emotional and mental health services because of their generous and compassionate nature.
