Community News & Events

May is Bike Month!

Bike Month is a time to recognize the numerous benefits of cycling, from improving fitness and reducing carbon emissions to fostering community connections. It's a chance to explore the world on two wheels, feel the wind in your hair, and rediscover the simple pleasure of pedaling. Throughout May, a wide range of events and activities are planned to engage and inspire cyclists of all ages and abilities. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or just starting out, Bike Month offers a plethora of opportunities to get involved, have fun, and make a positive impact!

Solana Beach Community Ride

Join BikeWalkSolana for the 3rd annual Tour of Solana Beach Community Ride on Sunday, May 7th. The event starts at La Colonia Park at 10:00 AM. From there the group will pedal through the lovely neighborhoods of Solana Beach at a leisurely pace. Previous tours had well over 100 people and more riders are expected this year, so please register in advance!

Bike Anywhere Day

We are also excited to see the reinvented Bike Anywhere Day (formerly known as Bike to Work Day). Bike Anywhere Day is for everyone in the San Diego region, not just for those who commute to work. Whether you are a student, parent, commuter, bike enthusiast, or someone who is new to biking, pledge to GO by BIKE ANYWHERE and everywhere you want to go on Thursday, May 18th. Join thousands of people and roll into one of our pit stops between 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM to receive your free t-shirt, while supplies last.

BikeWalkSolana Scavenger Hunt

Another opportunity to celebrate Bike Month is to participate in the BikeWalkSolana Scavenger Hunt. Back by popular demand, this Scavenger Hunt can be completed any time during Bike Month (May 1st – 31st). Start anywhere on the route for this family friendly adventure exploring beautiful Solana Beach biking or walking. See eclectic outdoor art, learn about Solana Beach history, and explore hidden parts of town. Submit your completed score sheet for a chance to win raffle prizes or the grand prize of an e-bike from Pedego Electric Bikes!

Cafecito with a Cop

Community Outreach is a top priority for the North Coastal Sheriff's Station. Come and meet with our bilingual Peace Officers, ask them questions and discuss any concerns you might have while enjoying complimentary coffee and pan dulce on Tuesday, May 9th from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, at the La Colonia Community Center. The Sheriff’s Department regularly hosts “Coffee with the Community” to give the public a chance to chat in a casual setting over a free cup of coffee. No speeches, no agenda, just casual conversation.

Spring Bulky-Item Cleanup Day

The City has partnered with EDCO to host the Spring Solana Beach Bulky-Item Cleanup on Saturday, May 13th, which gives residents the opportunity to place trash, green waste and up to four bulky items at the curb that would be too large or heavy to put inside collection carts. These items include broken appliances, water heaters, furniture, old mattresses and other miscellaneous bulky household clutter. To participate in this event, please schedule a pick-up beginning the week of May 1st by calling (858) 350-8544 and put items out curbside by 7:00 AM on Saturday, May 13th for collection.

Night of Music and Dance

Friends of the Solana Beach Library invites the community to come together and enjoy the art of music and dance. On May 16th from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, the Solana Beach library will transform into a traditional Mexican countryside with an evening of fun Mariachi music by three musicians from “Mariachi Serenata San Diego” and dance performances from the “Jaliscience Folkloric Group”. The night will also include discussion about mariachi and the impact it has had on their lives, as well as mariachi education in public schools.

Lomas Santa Fe Bridge Repair

This week, the City began performing maintenance repairs to the Lomas Santa Fe bridge that crosses the railroad tracks. The work will continue through May 19th and, to avoid traffic impacts, construction activity will be conducted at night and early morning between 8:00 PM and 6:00 AM and will be completed in approximately 3 weeks. While pedestrian and vehicular traffic will remain open in all directions, please avoid the work zone, if possible, and while traveling through the work zone, please pay extra attention to all traffic control signs.

Grant & Scholarship Opportunities

Solana Beach Community Grants

The City is soliciting grant applications until 5:00 PM, Thursday, May 25, 2023. The City Council has a total of $35,000 available for community organizations. A maximum of two grant applications may be submitted per community organization. Grants will be awarded with a maximum award of $6,000. Request for Grants are limited to non-governmental, nonprofit organizations serving the Solana Beach community. Excluded entities include the following: County of San Diego, Municipal Organizations, Special or Water Districts, school districts or schools (but not their supporting organizations), and private individuals.

Friends of the Solana Beach Library Scholarship

Need financial assistance to help with school expenses? The Friends of the Solana Beach Library are happy to announce that they will be awarding three or more scholarships again this year. These scholarships are only available to residents of Solana Beach and must be used for education beyond the high-school level anywhere in the United States, at a community college, a college or university, or a career, technical or vocational program. Application deadline is May 31, 2023. Apply today!

Solana Beach Civic & Historical Society Scholarship

The Solana Beach Civic & Historical Society knows education can be expensive and is awarding three Solana Beach residents $2,500 college scholarships. This scholarship is for graduating seniors who live within the city limits of the City of Solana Beach, and who will be attending a four-year college, a community college, or a technical school. These scholarships are also available to re-entering adult students planning to attend any of the above. The scholarships will be given based on the community service, grade point average and financial need of the applicant.
