To honor the "Sheroes" in our community, hosted in partnership by the USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter, AIA Women in Architecture, and 500 Women Scientists - St. Louis Pod, join us virtually next Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at 5:30 pm.
The 2020 Women in Green theme is “Sheroes,” which represents the female hero who excels under pressure and overcomes adversity. In this year of COVID-19, females in green industries are being asked to persevere, lead, and advocate for health and well-being in ways not previously encountered. To honor the Sheroes in our community, we bring together women who continually make a difference in green building, architecture, sustainability, and science, with a panel of our own Women in Green. Each organization will provide one panelist to give insight on the female perspective of the sustainability industry and real-life examples of sustainability solutions.
The unifying theme for the Women in Green panel discussion October 14th is Paul Hawken’s Project Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming. Project Drawdown provides a framework that outlines solutions and three connected areas of action to prevent catastrophic climate change; drawdown human carbon emissions to zero, support carbon sinks to improve nature’s carbon cycle, and improve society by promoting equality, health and education to foster global change.

Cities around the world have stepped up to set aggressive climate goals. Over 289 cities and counties have signed on to We Are Still In, an effort to support climate action at the local level by reducing greenhouse gas emissions 28% by 2025 and 80% by 2050, relative to a 2005 baseline. Locally, the City of St. Louis, Maplewood, and University City are signatories to We Are Still In. In October 2019, the City of St. Louis adopted an even more aggressive commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions 100% by 2050. But we still have a lot of work to do to meet these goals – so let’s get to work!

|
Who's ready to vote for the climate? Featured guest, Ross Hunt, chair of the Political Committee with the Missouri Sierra Club, leads our community discussion this Thursday (not Friday), October 8th at 10 am. Ross will discuss recent activities of the Political and Legislative Committees of the Missouri Sierra Club.
The Sierra Club addresses democracy issues, voter access, environmental racism, differential impacts of pollution on minority communities, and more! The Missouri Sierra Club tracks legislative records of state level legislators on scorecards (simply search, "MO Sierra Club legislative scorecard"). Register: bit.ly/coffeebreak08
This Coffee Break is free, but space is limited.

What's New in the Community?
|
|
Policy is a significant part of our green building community. Who or what we vote for has an impact on the environment, our health, and the community - just like how we design, build, and operate buildings has an impact on the environment, our health, and the community. Make your vote count this 2020 election.
TODAY, October 7, 2020 is Missouri's voter registration deadline to be eligible to vote in the November 3rd election. Are you registered to vote? Is your address up to date? Have you requested your ballot? What's your plan?
|
|
If you are VOTING in person on November 03, 2020, can you answer these questions?
- I will VOTE at address:
- I plan to get there by:

Continue the Quest! has officially begun! The USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter's Green Schools Quest is part of the collective movement towards sustainable schools.
The primary challenge this 2020-2021 school year is to integrate sustainability into students’ learning. Monthly themes challenge participants further by prompting them to examine how one of the principles outlined in the Rainbow of Sustainability relates to students’ learning.
- October: Importance of Place
- November: Interconnectedness
- December: Respect for Limits
- January: Systems Thinking & Cycles
- February: Social Justice
- March: Global Citizenship
The Green Schools Quest team provides project ideas and resources; schools are encouraged to share their progress with other participants to cultivate collaboration, spark new ideas, and collectively celebrate the integration of sustainability into students’ learning across our region. Continue the QUEST! #greenschoolsquest

In the City of St. Louis, buildings (residential, commercial, and industrial) are responsible for 80% of greenhouse gas emissions. Policies like the City's benchmarking requirements and the new Building Energy Performance Standard (BEPS) make St. Louis' existing buildings heroes in the fight against wasted energy, air pollution and climate change.
|
Continue to help your St. Louis region reduce its greenhouse gas emissions 100% by 2050 and join our Benchmarking 101 virtual event Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at 8:00 am - 9:30 am. As privately owned buildings are required to benchmark and submit data annually by May 01 of each year using the free, online tool ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, we encourage all buildings to gain experience benchmarking!
