Dear Panther Parents,
Today we had a special moment of silence and reflected on the events that occurred 20 years ago tomorrow. September 11th is a day I will never forget. What stands out to me the most as I reflect about that day, is the way our country came together to repair the devastation that was inflicted upon us. Our first responders were heroic, we supported families who lost loved ones, and the military responded swiftly. The days that followed 9/11 made me truly proud to be an American! Of course, I hated the loss of so many innocent people who simply went to work that day as if it were any other day on the job. However, the collective response from all walks of life, coming together, donating of money and time and words of encouragement was like nothing I had ever seen before and have not seen since. So today, during our moment of silence, I remembered again the prideful feeling of being part of something bigger than myself…I remembered how proud I am to be an American.
Now back to business. School pictures are next week, September 16th. This will be the picture that will be in our historically award-winning yearbook. Everything is digital now, so please see the newsletter for access to order pictures.
Our first Lockdown Drill was a success. Please keep in mind our next one will be unannounced in the spring.
For after-school sporting events and/or fine arts performances, students MUST BE ACCOMPANIED by an adult to attend. Please help us with this effort. This is a safety protocol and we appreciate your understanding.

FCA – Fellowship of Christian Athletes (although we like to call ourselves “Fellowship of Christian Anybodies since you DON’T have to be an athlete to attend) WILL be meeting this year in Mrs. Williams’ room (D-219) on Tuesday mornings from 8:15 – 8:40. We will have a light snack, play a quick game, and have a quick talk from a guest speaker. My hope is that our students will have the opportunity to make a few new friends and have a little fun each week. Hi Panthers,
We hope you are well. As the year gets underway, we know that conflicts with peers can arise as students learn more about themselves and their friends and classmates. Teaching students effective ways to communicate and to problem solve on their own can be an invaluable tool for lifelong success in relationships. Here are some great tips on how to teach kids to deal with conflict.
8th graders: This is your last chance for fall high school courses! Students can take self-paced, online classes in Health, Professional Communications, PE, Psychology, or Sociology. Courses have already begun, but you can still sign up. The cost is $120, or $50 for those with free/reduced lunch. If interested, please submit the following form: Interest in Online HS courses. Payment must be made before registration is complete.
If you have a need for food, clothing, or other necessities, please reach out to Mrs. Singletary, our Communities in Schools liaison. The Salvation Army Christmas Assistance Program is also taking applications.
Our peanut butter drive for the North Texas Food Bank is still ongoing! Thank you to those who have donated. Plastic jars of peanut butter can be brought in all month long. You may see some of the members of our Live Kind Club in morning carpool advertising the drive. The Live Kind Club meets the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month. Have your student join us on September 16th!

Dear Panther Families, We believe it takes the entire community to help our students grow into kind and compassionate young adults. Your student(s) receives a weekly CharacterDare on Mondays during Panther Time that is an actionable challenge focused on strengthening one of their “character muscles” like patience, kindness, commitment etc… The program we use, CharacterStrong, also provides Family CharacterDares that are aimed to provide actionable ways families can strengthen relationships, engage in character development activities together and continue conversations around serving others, and showing empathy and kindness for others. There are four categories of Dares:
• Conversation Starters
• Acts of Kindness
• Recreation and Rest
• Expressions of Love
Each week we will send out a Family CharacterDare that we challenge you to do with your students. The staff and administrators in the building will also be engaging in this personal character development as well. We believe in the power of role-modeling this work, and we have no doubt that with this common goal in mind, we are creating a more caring, compassionate, and capable world. The first time she saw him, she flipped. The first time he saw her, he ran. That was the second grade, but not much has changed by the seventh. She says: "My Bryce. Still walking around with my first kiss." He says: "It's been six years of strategic avoidance and social discomfort." But in the eighth grade everything gets turned upside down. And just as he's thinking there's more to her than meets the eye, she's thinking that he”s not quite all he seemed.
This is a classic romantic comedy of errors told in alternating chapters by two fresh, funny new voices. Wendelin Van Draanen is at her best here with a knockout cast of quirky characters and a hilarious series of misunderstandings and missed opportunities. But underlying the humor are two teens in transition. They are each learning to look beyond the surface of people, both figuring out who they are, who they want to be, and who they want to be with.

Just remember, like a lot of medical conditions, hydrocephalus may or may not be something that we can see on the outside of a person. This is just another reason to always be kind and respectful to the people around us! You may not know what someone may be going through or what is affecting their health. What is hydrocephalus? Hydrocephalus is an abnormal buildup of fluid in the ventricles (cavities) deep within the brain. This excess fluid causes the ventricles to widen, putting pressure on the brain’s tissues.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued guidance that allows schools to offer meals to all students at no cost for the 2021-2022 school year. McKinney will be participating in the USDA waivers for free meals once again this school year. Healthy meals will be offered every school day to all students at no cost.
Typically, a student’s household must meet income eligibility requirements to qualify for free or reduced-price meals. While no application or eligibility determination is required for your student to receive free meals this school year, income eligibility requirements will likely resume in the 2022-2023 school year. As such, McKinney ISD will process household applications during School Year 2021-2022 to ensure student eligibility for free or reduced-price meals during the first 30 days of the 2022-2023 school year
