A Message From the President
As 2020 drew to a close and I know many of us are more than ready for what we hope is a fresh start. If there is anything this year has been, it is “Year of the Nurse.” The call came, and each of us answered in some way but none so more than those on the front line. To those who still stand on the line, thank you doesn’t seem enough; to those who have fallen while on the line, thank you isn’t enough. We have learned many a lesson and will move forward.
A touch of history
We began in 2000 in partnership with AAN and the Hartford Foundation with a goal of growing the next generation of geriatric researchers and leaders. In 2012 we moved to GSA and in 2014 we became an independent non-profit organization. There has been many a challenge and this has revealed the strength of who we are as gerontological nurses.

Coronavirus and COVID-19: Caregiving for the Elderly
When it comes to COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, older people are especially vulnerable to severe illness. Research is showing that adults 60 and older, especially those with preexisting medical conditions, especially heart disease, lung disease, diabetes or cancer are more likely to have severe — even deadly — coronavirus infection than other age groups.
If you’re caring for an older loved one, you might be worried. Alicia Arbaje, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D. specializes in internal medicine and geriatrics at Johns Hopkins. She shares what you need to know to keep elderly people safer, and what to do if they do become infected with COVID-19.

Older People Who Want An Early COVID-19 Vaccine Might Not Get One As Quickly As They’d Like
Older Americans eager to get vaccinated against Covid-19 may need to exercise some patience.
While Medicare — which insures much of the 65-and-older crowd — recently changed its rules so it can fully cover a fast-tracked vaccine, the availability of doses will be initially limited. And, individual states are tasked with actually distributing the vaccine and identifying priority populations to innoculate.
“I think there are still major issues to resolve with vaccine distribution, which is being primarily left up to states to work out,” said Juliette Cubanski, deputy director for the Kaiser Family Foundation’s program on Medicare policy.

Falls in Older Adults with Cognitive Impairment
Myla A. Magno DNP APRN GNP-BC GS-C
Michael E. De Bakey VA Medical Center
Background: Clinical and research evidence has established that cognitive impairment and falls are coexistent; gait impairments and falls are common in individuals with dementia. Older adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) are at higher risk for falls than those with normal cognitive aging. The extent of falls increases with the severity of cognitive impairment. Several prospective cohort studies relative to older adults fall systematically excluded those with moderate or severe cognitive impairment, which was a challenge in standardized fall evaluation across the full mental spectrum.

Barriers to Fall Prevention in Older Adults

Falls have been extensively studied in the last 2 to 3 decades. There is consensus agreement among medical professionals that falls are multifactorial and often a symptom of underlying conditions or diseases. Risk factors have been identified, multiple screening and assessment tools have been devised and interventions have been standardized for treatment plans. There is significant evidence that falls are preventable, and recovery is possible. Yet, despite progress that has been made, future projections are that the incidence and prevalence of falls will continue to climb. According to the CDC, as the older adult population numbers increase by approximately 20 million from 2018 to 2030, the number of anticipated falls increases in direct proportion.

Check Out This Great Read!

We're, as doctors, we're so risk-averse and afraid that we've let these private equity companies and these people tell us how to practice medicine to make profit.
And I think in COVID what we're seeing is this, this is kind of coming to a head in how we're treating our patients at the end of life and saying, well, you can't have visitors and all of this, but what do you think about this?
Prasad:
Yeah, I recently went on a bit of a tirade online about this topic and you know, I'll read you what I said, and then we can go from there. Oh my gosh. Yeah. So somebody, I saw somebody tweeting some picture of a room, a storeroom full of iPads on like a mobile, a rolly cart. And they say haunting pic of iPads used by loved ones to say goodbye to COVID-19 patients.

Due to popular demand, we are proud to re-open the ANCC Preceptor Bank! Graduate students, APRN faculty, and universities may once again benefit from the ANCC Preceptor Bank. The ANCC Preceptor Bank will serve as a repository tool to access and locate eligible APRN preceptors who can be a great match for graduate students needing knowledge, skills, and clinical expertise in a specific practice specialty/setting.
