SCC Fund Mini-Grant Update: 3D Models for Anatomy and Physiology

Thank you, donors to the SCC Fund—your support makes SCC Mini Grant projects possible!

A recent project you supported is the creation of new 3D Models that students in Anatomy and Physiology can use in the remote environment. This project, a partnership between the SCC Makerspace and the Biology Department, was proposed as a way for students to be able to manipulate and study anatomy models online, just as they would do in a campus lab.

The models were scanned and digitized over the summer by SCC Makerspace student Indigo Perez. Using equipment that the Makerspace owns, she scanned each model by hand, and then used software to render them in a 3D environment.

Biology Professor Chris Sullivan, who proposed the project, said,

“This project is allowing students to study anatomy models at home and away from campus in ways not available until now. The professional quality of Indigo’s creations surpassed any of our expectations for what was possible. Hopefully we can build on this project to create an entire library of free anatomical models for students across the district.”

Thank you, SCC Fund donors, for making this innovation possible!

We plan to issue a new call for mini grant proposals in Spring 2021, so we hope you’ll be making plans to propose innovative ideas that will impact our students’ educational experience in the future!
Together We Give #GivingTuesday
Giving Tuesday is December 1: Make a gift to Panther Cares – help an SCC student stay on the path!

Food and housing insecurity have no zip code, no age, no face, no season. When the coronavirus pandemic hit in March of this year, campuses closed, students lost their jobs, and many faced the difficult decision of staying in school or paying their rent. For an untold number of students, they had nowhere to turn.

At Los Rios, all four campuses and the Los Rios Colleges Foundation combined resources and embarked on a comprehensive campaign to raise funds to address our student’s basic needs. By October of this year, through the generosity of our faculty, staff, community, and corporate partners, 160 students received Student Emergency Fund grants totaling $102,415, and $34,000 in total was transferred to the campus Cares programs to provide hotel stays for homeless students.

On #GivingTuesday, we ask you to make a gift to Panther Cares Program. Donations will continue to provide resources directly to SCC’s students that could mean the difference of feeding their children, paying their rent, or staying in school.

Our Panther Cares program provides additional funding for emergency hotel stays, future food distribution on campus (Spring 2021), and emergency grants for SCC students.

Donating on GivingTuesday is easy! You can make a gift onlineenroll in payroll deduction, or mail a check to campus, attn: Philanthropy.

Thank you for all you have done, not just during the last eight months, but during your time at SCC to help our students. YOU can be the reason an SCC student laces up his or her shoes and chooses to remain on the path of education.

GivingTuesday was “created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past seven years, it has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.”
SCC Scholarships Update

The 2020 scholarships season was another banner year--and our biggest yet! At SCC, we awarded 400 scholarships for a total of $268,000 in support.

We want to take this opportunity to thank the many employees who generously support scholarships; we are so grateful for the impact you have on our students’ lives. Your support has been even more impactful this year, when so many of our students have faced financial setbacks because of the COVID-19 crisis.

Here are a few of our students, in their own words, about how much scholarships mean to them:

“I would like to sincerely thank you for your generosity. Only a few weeks ago it seemed likely that I would have to alter my academic course in order to work. My wife is unable to work through these trying times but with the help from this scholarship and other resources it seems likely that I will be able to stay on track to finish at SCC in the spring of next year.”  --Chase

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your generosity. Growing up in a not-so-privileged household has not only affected me financially and academically, but has allowed me to value my college education. Being a first generation DACA recipient I am grateful to continue my journey in not only attending the school of my dreams but accomplishing the dream my mother had for me, and setting an example to those after me.”  -Mariana

Thank you to everyone who is a part of the scholarships process, as donors, readers, and advisors to students during the application process!

Year End Giving – Did You Know?

As a result of the CARES act, the IRS has temporarily suspended the limits on charitable deductions for 2020. According to the IRS’ article “In most cases, the amount of charitable cash contributions taxpayers can deduct on Schedule A as an itemized deduction is limited to a percentage (usually 60 percent) of the taxpayer’s adjusted gross income (AGI). Qualified contributions are not subject to this limitation. Individuals may deduct qualified contributions of up to 100 percent of their adjusted gross income.”

To qualify, the contribution must be:
  • a cash contribution;
  • made to a qualifying organization;
  • made during the calendar year 2020

Contributions of non-cash property do not qualify for this relief. Taxpayers may still claim non-cash contributions as a deduction, subject to the normal limits.

In addition, people who do not itemize can deduct up to $300 in charitable giving.

So, donating to SCC this year not only feels good, it helps your bottom line!
