Focusing on the Future

The Board of Education held a special session meeting after the second community forum on Monday, November 1 to discuss feedback heard throughout the forum of the three potential options explored and to narrow the focus for the third community forum. The board will ask Klingner & Associates to further explore the blended approach presented, including adding a new wing to the middle school, relocation of the athletic track, and other potential improvements at the stadium.

You can find conceptual drawings and cost estimates at the link below.

The board will host the third community forum on Wednesday, December 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the secondary cafeteria. Community members can enter through the West Gym doors at the back of the high school. The goal of the community forums is to hear from district leaders and Board of Education members on a potential no tax-rate increase bond for the April 2022 ballot and seek community feedback on identified campus facility needs.
Congratulations Sandy Alexander
Educator of the Year

Congratulations to Sandy Alexander for her recent nomination and selection for Hallsville Educator of the Year. Each year, the Hallsville Chamber of Commerce selects an educator to honor for their hard work and dedication to the Hallsville School District.

Holly Crane, a Hallsville parent, nominated Mrs. Alexander who is a paraprofessional that has worked with her now 3rd grader Ty Crane for the past six years. With Holly’s permission, below is a small excerpt from her nomination form.

“It takes someone special to hear what a child can not say. This is what Mrs. Sandy does every day for my child that is non-verbal. Sandy is committed to Ty and all the children she works with. This past year Ty moved to the intermediate to start third grade, and Sandy requested to move over to the intermediate so she could be the one familiar thing for Ty in the new building. She puts all her heart into teaching and inspiring her kids. Her love for learning inspires kids with special needs to push themselves. She is always finding creative ways to help Ty be part of the class, which he absolutely loves. She is eager to adapt to Ty’s ever-changing needs. Most importantly she is a voice for Ty. She understands his wants and needs and is always willing to stand up for what is best for Ty!”

Thank you, Holly and Ty Crane for your nomination of Sandy Alexander! She truly is a wonderful educator!

Congratulations Sara Crane
Citizen of the Year

Congratulations to Sara Crane for her recent nomination and selection for Hallsville Citizen of the Year. Each year, the Hallsville Chamber of Commerce selects a citizen to honor for their hard work and dedication to the City of Hallsville. This year, we would like to share out this nomination because of Nurse Crane’s dedication to the Hallsville Community and the students of Hallsville. Below is a small excerpt from the nomination.

“Sara is the school nurse at Hallsville Intermediate School and wears many hats. She is a first-rate school nurse, taking care of many aches and pains all day, as well as many illnesses. In addition, Sara repairs and makes Halloween costumes the morning of the Halloween parties and makes Valentine’s Day boxes for students so that no child is without. Sara also helps create and paint scenes for the school’s plays and helps decorate the stage. She is also involved in the Hallsville sports community, helping paint the Indian on the football field, creating Fat Heads for senior players, planting flowers at school, and helping organize fundraisers for the Quarterbackers. Sara is a very kind and giving person, who can’t say no!”

Congratulations to Sara Crane, Hallsville’s Citizen of the Year! We appreciate all that you do for our students and the Hallsville community!

Below are highlights of items discussed during the open session of the Wednesday, October 20 Board of Education meeting. The full agenda and highlights can be found on the district websiteThe next regular session meeting is Wednesday, November 17, 2021, at 6:00 p.m. in the Hallsville Primary School cafeteria.

RECOGNITIONS
Hallsville Faculty and Staff were recognized for their dedication to our schools and students. This year, many of our teachers have given up their plan time to cover classrooms due to a lack of substitute teachers.

FACILITY PROJECTS
The board approved cooler roof repairs at the primary and intermediate schools and the replacement of two exterior doors in the secondary that have deteriorated over time due to high volume use. The Board also approved improvements to the greenhouse flooring and drainage systems. Concrete flooring will help with disease and pest control, as well as address potential tripping hazards and table leveling issues.

SAFE RETURN TO IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION AND CONTINUITY OF SERVICES PLAN
The Board voted to make amendments to the district’s current Safe Return to In-Person Instruction and Continuity of Services Plan. The amendment includes the following change:
  • Face coverings are strongly encouraged for all individuals within Hallsville School District facilities. Posted signage will continue to encourage face coverings in district facilities. A return to required face coverings for students and staff may be necessary if more than 2% of a building’s population (students and staff combined) are positive with COVID at any single point in time. Once enacted, the requirement will be in effect for two weeks from the time of implementation, after which time numbers will be reevaluated.
All other protocols and precautions will remain in place. If the 2% threshold is met, communication will be sent out to all families regarding the change. The Safe Return to In-Person Instruction and Continuity of Services Plan will also continue to be reviewed each month at the Board of Education meeting.

STAFFING
The district continues to actively seek candidates for hourly positions, particularly custodians and substitute bus drivers. In addition, the district has examined options to address the issues detailed below, resulting in the reconfiguration or establishment of some additional positions in the near future:
  • Contact Tracer
  • English Language Development Specialist
  • Interpreters
