The Day That Changed America Forever
|
|
Tomorrow marks the 20th anniversary of Tuesday, September 11th, 2001, when the United States experienced the deadliest terrorist attack in its history.
The Chamber pauses this weekend to remember and honor the victims of that day, the first responders, the families who lost loved ones, and the members of our military who fought and died in the ensuing wars on terror.
May we forever cherish our freedoms and our heritage, and may we strive to live in peace and unity with our neighbors at home and abroad.
“For me and my family personally, September 11 was a reminder that life is fleeting, impermanent, and uncertain. Therefore, we must make use of every moment and nurture it with affection, tenderness, beauty, creativity, and laughter.” — Deepak Chopra

Great Books About Business With Just A Click
Your link to success begins at the library. With each week of "In The Know,"
you to a business book or magazine that will inspire, teach, inform, or elevate you, professionally and personally. This week:
Fulfillment: Winning and Losing in One-Click America
by Alec MacGillis
In 1937, the famed writer and activist Upton Sinclair published a novel bearing the subtitle A Story of Ford-America. He blasted the callousness of a company worth "a billion dollars" that underpaid its workers while forcing them to engage in repetitive and sometimes dangerous assembly line labor. Eighty-three years later, the market capitalization of Amazon.com has exceeded one trillion dollars, while the value of the Ford Motor Company hovers around thirty billion. We have, it seems, entered the age of one-click America--and as the coronavirus makes Americans more dependent on online shopping, its sway will only intensify.
Alec MacGillis's Fulfillment is not another inside account or exposé of our most conspicuously dominant company. Rather, it is a literary investigation of the America that falls within that company's growing shadow. As MacGillis shows, Amazon's sprawling network of delivery hubs, data centers, and corporate campuses epitomizes a land where winner and loser cities and regions are drifting steadily apart, the civic fabric is unraveling, and work has become increasingly rudimentary and isolated.

First drunk driving arrest
From History: On September 10, 1897, a 25-year-old London taxi driver named George Smith becomes the first person ever arrested for drunk driving after slamming his cab into a building. Smith later pleaded guilty and was fined 25 shillings.
In the United States, the first laws against operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol went into effect in New York in 1910. In 1936, Dr. Rolla Harger, a professor of biochemistry and toxicology, patented the Drunkometer, a balloon-like device into which people would breathe to determine whether they were inebriated.
In 1953, Robert Borkenstein, a former Indiana state police captain and university professor who had collaborated with Harger on the Drunkometer, invented the Breathalyzer.
Easier-to-use and more accurate than the Drunkometer, the Breathalyzer was the first practical device and scientific test available to police officers to establish whether someone had too much to drink. A person would blow into the Breathalyzer and it would gauge the proportion of alcohol vapors in the exhaled breath, which reflected the level of alcohol in the blood.

With the distribution of the vaccine, the U.S. is making significant progress in the fight against COVID-19. This has been reflected in the job market, as new unemployment claims decreased week-over-week on August 30.
Did You Know?
- There are currently 8.4 million Americans unemployed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in total...
- There were 310,000 new unemployment claims nationwide, which is a lot fewer than the 6.1 million during the peak of the pandemic (a 95% reduction).
- Five states had unemployment claims last week that were lower than before the pandemic: Arkansas, Arizona, South Carolina, Delaware, and Pennsylvania.
- Surprisingly, New Mexico had unemployment claims last week that were worse than the same week last year.
