Week of April 26, 2021

Good Afternoon CCGS Families,

We had a great week at Circle Center! The author visit was so fun for our students and they learned so much about Earth Day and caring for our earth. At this point in the year, all the hard work and efforts from the year come together. Our kindergarten students are reading and writing sentences and so proud of their math skills! Our first grade students have become so fluent in their reading and have grown immensely in their comprehension skills. They have also become more fluent in their math skills with so many of our students already on division on Moby Max! Our second grade students have deepened their level of comprehension and writing skills this year. This year they became experts at counting money and telling time in math and learned how to regroup with addition and subtraction of numbers in the 100's. Our third grade students have grown into leaders of the building! They are writing stories with so many details and have become experts on non-fiction research writing. This year they also became fluent in multiplication and division. One of the biggest areas of growth for our third grade students has been in the area of going back to the text to find evidence to support an answer.

Input needed to help set foundation's funding priorities

Yorkville Educational Foundation (YEF), the nonprofit partner of Yorkville CUSD 115, has raised more than $125,000 since its inception. YEF is seeking the community's input through a short 10-question survey regarding which programs to invest in district-wide. All participants will be entered into a drawing for a $250 grant to go towards the Y115 school of his/her choice. Even if you're not familiar with the foundation, your input is valuable for future planning.  Survey Link (http://yef115.org/assessment)

Taste of Yorkville "Culture Matters" event goes virtual on April 24

The Yorkville School District 115’s Bilingual Parent Advisory Council (BPAC), in collaboration with the United City of Yorkville Parks and Recreation, will host the second annual Taste of Yorkville “Culture Matters” event this Saturday, April 24. This year's event is being held virtually in recognition of “Celebrate Diversity Month.” The event aims to help the community recognize and celebrate the diverse cultural differences and similarities between Yorkville CUSD 115 families.
This year’s committee was determined to bring the cultural experience back to the community in some form or fashion. Although there will not be a physical distribution of “passports” for this year’s travel excursion, participants can still travel to different parts of the world without leaving Yorkville. This year’s virtual experience will highlight videos of various countries and cultures along with a keynote speaker. There will also be an opportunity to be entered into a drawing for a gift certificate from one of the event partners.
For additional details, including the link to participate in the event, please visit www.yorkville.il.us/tasteofyorkville.

  • Congratulations to all! For the fourth consecutive year, Yorkville has been named as a Best Community for Music Education by NAMM. Yorkville is one of 14 school districts in Illinois to receive the designation this year. This year's application process focused on innovation and instruction during the pandemic. We are proud of our students, educators, administration, Board of Education, and community for this outstanding recognition!
  • Introducing District 115’s New Online Payment Portal. Yorkville CUSD 115 is now accepting online payments! Conveniently pay fees, purchase tickets, add money to lunch accounts, and much more from a computer or mobile device. The district’s new payment portal saves time and ensures users that their payments are securely sent to and received by the district. Debit, credit card and eChecks are accepted. Parents are encouraged to set up a payment portal account at https://y115.RevTrak.net (access is also available on the home pages of the district/schools websites). The system is currently accepting payments for current account balances, elementary intramurals, and Yorkville Education Foundation donations.
Mrs. Niner's Classroom Highlight of the Week

How long have you been working on our show?
It takes six weeks to learn our music and rehearse for our show. First through 3rd grader students have music class for 40 minutes and Kindergarten has it for 25 minutes every four days. In addition to learning our songs, we also learn about riser safety, performance and audience etiquette. As the leaders, the 3rd graders also learned their speaking parts for the performance and used the green screen! The backgrounds are featured artwork from select Kindergarten students.
With the pandemic, we have had to show a lot of flexibility and creativity with this music program. After everyone learned the show, we had a recording session in the gym. Every class recorded their songs on the risers along with speaking parts and solos in only one class period. It was a lot of work but also a ton of fun!

What are they supposed to be learning from our show?
The title of our show is “Character Street” and explores many qualities including kindness, courage, responsibility, good judgement, self discipline, perseverance, integrity and respect. With the pandemic the focus on social and emotional learning is more important than ever! While learning our songs, we also read books, watched videos and listened to songs about these qualities. These resources are still available in the virtual music classroom. Along with the theme of our show students also demonstrate several musical learning objectives while performing this program such as vocal technique and the role of an audience and performer. Students are also expected to demonstrate these expectations throughout the performance.
With the pandemic, we have had to show a lot of flexibility and creativity with this music program. We could not have done this without the support of all CCGS staff and families!

Thank you so much for your continued support and flexibility!

Love,
Mrs. Niner's Classroom
