JUNE
RESCUE ROUNDUP
Save the Date
It's that time of the year when we get to welcome the El Paso community with the help of our friends from KVIA into our shelter life. Our 29th Annual "Be A Star, Save A Life" Telethon will be aired on August 6th from 4:00 - 11:00 pm on KVIA Channel 7.

This year's telethon will help HSEP raise crucial funds to continue to provide essential medical care for the thousands of animals that walk in through our doors. The Humane Society of El Paso's medical budget is nearly $400,000 a year to provide essential medical care such as spay/neuter surgeries and/or vaccinations.

Mark your calendars, get your snacks ready, cuddle up with your furry kiddos and enjoy six hours of behind the scene footage, adoption stories, and staff profiles, and help HSEP continue its life-saving work.
Pet's Barn Gives

The pandemic has deeply affected the El Paso community. At the beginning of the pandemic, Emergency Directives from the City forced the Humane Society to close its doors to visitors for nearly 6 months. While the front doors may have been closed to the public, it was business as usual in the kennels. Our staff continued to feed and care for nearly 200 dogs and cats at the Shelter, while our Foster Department provided ongoing support to the 144 animals placed in our volunteer foster homes. One of the most important times of the day was “chow time”, and our 344 cats and dogs went through a lot of chow.

We were so fortunate to know Dean Travis, the President of Pet’s Barn. In March 2020, we were overwhelmed to receive an email from him that said his company was stepping up to the plate to supply dog and cat food at NO COST to HSEP. Mr. Travis said, “Pet’s Barn is not going to let the Humane Society of El Paso run out of food”.

Now, nearly 2 ½ years later, Pet’s Barn has donated over 1,500 bags of dog and cat food to make sure the Humane Society’s dogs and cats continue to be well fed and can thrive. The food is delivered fresh from the Pet’s Barn factory. “We make our own dog and cat food, so we were in a great place to be able to support the Humane Society of El Paso. I am so glad we have been able to help,” said Mr. Travis.

In addition to Pet’s Barn’s support of the Humane Society, Pet’s Barn makes sure that dog and cat food is available to adoptive families at a reasonable cost. This is so important when pet food is often unavailable at local stores.

The Humane Society of El Paso gives a four-paws salute to Dean Travis and Pet’s Barn for continuing to support the Humane Society of El Paso and all of the animals they serve.
Critters and Kids
Animal Ed'ventures has come to an end!
Campers and staff enjoyed another fun-filled summer of animal welfare presentations, crafts, animal interactions, and our traditional water day!

We would like to take this time to thank all of our presenters, El Paso Animal Services, PetSmart Fountains, and Krazy Arrow Ranchette for spending time with our campers and teaching them how important it is to be animal advocates not only for dogs and cats but also to reptiles, small animals, and farm animals.

Keep an eye out for our next Critters N Kids Animal ED ventures and don't let your kiddos miss out on all the FUN!
Thank you, Petco Love!
We were over the moon when we received the news that Petco Love (formally known as Petco Foundation) had awarded the Humane Society of El Paso a $50,000 grant!

Petco Love is a national nonprofit leading change for pets by harnessing the power of love to make communities and pet families closer, stronger, and healthier. Since its founding in 1999, Petco Love has invested $330 million in adoption and other lifesaving efforts. And Petco Love helps find loving homes for pets in partnership with Petco and more than 4,000 organizations — like ours — across North America, with 6.5 million pets adopted and counting.

“Our investment in the Humane Society of El Paso is part of more than $15M in investments recently announced by Petco Love to power local organizations across the country as part of our commitment to creating a future in which no pet is unnecessary euthanized,” said Susanne Kogut, president of Petco Love. “Our local investments are only part of our strategy to empower animal lovers to drive lifesaving change right alongside us. We recently celebrated the one-year launch anniversary of Petco Love Lost, a national lost and found database that uses pet facial recognition technology to simplify the search for lost pets.”

“This grant ensures and increases the health and well-being of our shelter animals so they can be placed in adoptive families,” said Deb Benedict, Executive Director of the Humane Society of El Paso. “Given the lower than the average socio-economic level that much of El Paso falls into, there are many dogs and cats, both owned and homeless, that are not spayed/neutered and/or vaccinated. In addition, many have not received regular preventive medical care. This obviously presents a real problem in the community that must be solved. This generous grant from Petco Love helps us provide a broad spectrum of medical services, including spay/neuter surgeries and vaccinations. These services increase the health and well-being of our animals so they are ready for their forever homes!”

Thank you, Petco Love, for your generous investment in our facility and mission to continue to help change the lives of the thousands of homeless animals that continue to walk through our doors each year. Thanks to our continued partnership with your location Petco Zaragoza, we hope to continue to complete families four paws at a time for many years to come.

Volunteer Spotlight

Meet Tina! She has been a part of the HSEP volunteer team for four years. She began to volunteer a few months after her twin sister, Susan started to volunteer a few months later they had recruited Tina's husband Sergio, Susan's son Alex, and Lisa their dear friend.

Tina had been an educator for 27 years, when she retired a year ago we were very excited to know she would be able to spend more time at the shelter. She has become a crucial piece to our team, from animal handling to offsite adoption events, no matter what we need help with Tina will always lend us a hand.

Thank you Tina for everything you do for HSEP and our animals!
June is Foster Month
June is Foster Month! The Humane Society of El Paso has again partnered with our friends at Petco Love to spread the word about how crucial fostering is for shelters across the country, including HSEP.

Petco Love is a life-changing nonprofit that makes communities and pet families closer, stronger, and healthier. They were founded in 1999 as the Petco Foundation. They began this initiative to increase participation in Foster programs across the country. During the month of, June they will work with the Sketchers charity brand to share the fun aspects of fostering while helping foster parents say their goodbyes to their foster babies.

Saying goodbye to your fosters is among the most cited reasons why people will decide not to become foster parents. Petco Love is taking a humorous approach to saying goodbye to them by holding a #MyFosterBreakUp story contest featuring a foster breakup kit and a cura ted playlist to help foster parents through their goodbyes. Kits will include breakup essentials: cozy, festive socks from BOBS from Sketchers, a pint of Ben & Jerry's ice cream, Kleenex, the official Petco Love Foster Breakup Spotify List, a foster tee that reminds us that "Foster Pets are here for a fun time, not a long time.", a chance for HSEP to win at $10k lifesaving grant, and a doggie ice cream party with foster swag!

There is still time to share your breakup story! Don't forget to use #MyFosterBreakup to be entered for your chance to win.
