WELCOME - LETTER FROM THE BABC PRESIDENT
|

 |
Dear Friends of the BABC,
Every month when I sit down to write this newsletter there is something significant to address. This past month we have all been severely impacted by the poor air quality as a result of the many wildfires burning throughout California. In late August we all experienced ‘life on Mars’ for a day and while this might be a dream Mr Musk is keen to chase, I am sure none of us want to go through that again. Our thoughts are with those who lost their homes or their loved ones in these fires and our thanks go to the brave firefighters who put their lives on the line every year to keep us safe.
You will have to excuse me if this month I choose to ignore the recent Presidential debate if indeed we can call it that. I am hopeful that for round two all parties and all involved will learn from the many mistakes that were made in this first round.
So, between the fires, the election and the pandemic 2020 continues to be a year to forget. Fortunately for us at the BABC you have not forgotten us and we wanted to thank you for your continued support of this organization. The BABC Team continues to work hard to deliver value to its members as best they can right now but also to develop programs for 2021 taking into consideration the potential for the year to start with limited in-person interaction.
During the summer months, we have hosted an array of social events that have included, monthly Happy Hours, panel discussion events, two wine tastings, a pub quiz, and the BABC Annual General Meeting, the 64th instalment, and held for the first time virtually. Thank you to all that provided a Ballot ahead of the event and to those that joined us online. As a result, the appointment of 6 new directors and 7 re-elected directors were approved. Congratulations to my fellow board members, I look forward to continue serving alongside you all. View our full Board of Directors here> https://babcsf.org/directors-staff/
On related note, I would like to extend my thanks and the thanks of the entire BABC community to Nicholas Unkovic as he steps down as BABC Chairman. Nick has been a mainstay of the BABC in San Francisco for more than 20 years and in addition to serving as our Chairman for the past couple of years he is also a past President and long serving board member. His contribution to the organization, to our community and his guidance and advice to many of us individually over the years has been invaluable. We will miss him but certainly not forget him. A ‘proper’ send-off will be organized once we are able to gather again in-person. We wish Nick luck as he ‘retires from the law but not from life’. Thank you Nick.
As was mentioned at the AGM, in October and November we plan to host a series of events on global mobility, real-estate, the hospitality industry, and more related to how Covid-19 has impacted our daily operations and what this means for our future. In this spirit, we have the last of the 3-Part Workshop Series ‘Thriving through Crises’ on October 6th.
We hope to see many of you at our upcoming events and wish you an enjoyable and healthy start to the Fall Season.

A Message from BABC Outgoing Chairman
Nicholas Unkovic
|
|
Dear BABC Members.
Sadly, my time as Chairman of the BABC Northern California has come to an end and a new chairman will shortly be appointed. I wanted to reflect on my association with the organization. I have served on the BABC Board since the mid-1980s as a representative of my old law firm, Squire Patton Boggs, which is a founding member of our chapter. I retired at the end of 2018 and Greg Wald now ably serves as Squire's nominee to our board.
Serving as a BABC Director, its President, and its Chair has been a huge honor and privilege. We have a vibrant, active and dedicated chapter that has always been true to its mission of supporting US - UK trade and investment. We do good work through timely programs, networking meetings and other events, while also strongly supporting local charities, and, of course, socializing.
Volunteering for a non-profit allows us to serve our community. It is also personally gratifying. But most important in the long run are the relationships we develop with our colleagues. For all the years I have been involved with the BABC we have had dedicated and active board members, executive directors, staff and volunteers who, along with outstanding UK consular and DIT representatives, have greatly enriched our lives. Know that in this time of pandemic your current board members, Jo and our colleagues have redoubled their efforts for our BABC. Our chapter is in excellent hands.
I am grateful for the friendship and support of all of these colleagues and of our members. My work with Jo has been particularly meaningful and, I believe, mutually rewarding, as has been her friendship with my wife Elizabeth and me.
Thank you, our members, for your support over the years in helping our chapter to thrive, especially in these times of pandemic and division. Ours is one of the oldest and largest of the BABC Chapters, and this year we celebrate our 67th anniversary. With your help, we will be around for many more to come.
Nick
