O God, because without you we are not able to please you, mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

ON 9-11
(September 6, 2021)
Aloha my dear Siblings in Christ,

I distinctly remember the feeling of deep sadness as these words were sung in the Cathedral during the first public liturgy immediately after the tragedy of September 11, 2001. The years following have been marked by wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. We have had to adapt to increased security in our everyday lives. Our sense of personal security was shaken. We have mourned lives lost. Life was changed.

It has now been twenty years since that fateful day. I hope everyone will take the time to reflect this week on our call to be servants of God’s peace (Matthew 5:9): “Happy are people who make peace, because they will be called God’s children.” READ MORE

Pastoral Word from Presiding Bishop on the Anniversary of Sept. 11
As followers of Jesus, and with our siblings in other faith traditions, we place great value on the act of remembrance. As we reflect on the solemn anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, we remember many loved ones lost and first responders who put their lives at risk, modeling the sacrificial love of Jesus, who said: “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” READ MORE

Tuesdays, starting October 5, 2021, planned ending March 29, 2022
  • 5:00-5:45pm Session I (first-time students)

Pandemic Resource for Children
The Liturgical Advisory Committee (LAC) of the Church of Ireland has published a resource for use in the Church to help children to reflect on their experiences of the pandemic. The resource, entitled A Service of Lamentation and Hope in the Context of a Pandemic Experience, centers around the themes of lament and hope and is available at this link.

This resource has been prepared in such a way that it may be used as an all–age service in a parish context, in a school setting, or with a Sunday School or Sunday Club. It is intended to help create space for the whole Church to acknowledge the losses that everyone within our communities, including children, have endured over the past months. Suggestions for creative and experiential prayer around the themes of lament, hope, and renewal are included, and may be adapted as needed to suit particular local contexts. Epiphany: Boy Scouts Lend a Hand
The following are excerpts from a report that appeared on Epiphany Episcopal Church's Facebook page. It was written by the Boy Scouts of America Troop 82, who recently cleaned up Epiphany's grounds:

[On] Saturday, August 21, we had our Church Cleanup exactly one week after the chicken sale. Daniel Oato, a Life Scout in our troop, finalized details and briefed everyone at our weekly meeting the Friday before the cleanup. Scouts and parents arrived at 8:30 in the morning and were split into different workgroups. One group pulled weeds, picked up trash, and cleaned up the back walkway/gardening area. In the front, scouts and parents swept the parking lot, pulled weed, and washed the sidewalk, stairs, and the upper floor. In the end, scouts then did a final cleanup or 'sweep' and picked up after themselves.
Thank you again for your continuous support of our Boy Scout Troop
Caring for Our Worship Spaces
Although worship services may be limited during pandemic times, the care for our worship spaces continues in earnest. Pictured above, the folks at St. Peter's are shown cleaning and polishing to make their sanctuary shine! (Photos from the St. Peter's September Newsletter)
Coming Up: Samoan "White Sunday" at Holy Nativity
Long-time Holy Nativity member, Tusi Mayer, will be helping create our celebration this fall. White Sunday is a holiday in Samoa and Tonga that was created by the London Missionary Society (now the Congregational Christian Church in Samoa - CCCS) in 1898. On the second Sunday in October, parents and church communities acknowledge and celebrate the importance of children. The White Sunday church service features special programs by the children, all dressed in white, that include scriptural readings, biblical plays, poetry, and musical performances. Children also receive gifts and are served by their parents at the special Sunday meal called the to’ona’i.

St. James': Build Community One Meal at a Time
(The following are excerpts from the St. James' weekley e-news on their community meal this past week, that take dozens of volunteers to put on a meal ministry of this size each week. Sponsors are integral to their success.)

What a meal tonight-LAMB! So special to have a delicious meal on our menu. A very special MAHALO to our sponsors Mike & Lor Gehret and the Hoover 'Ohana. They have been sponsoring our meals not once, not twice, and not even three times. Tonight makes it their 4th sponsored meal since 2018! Thank you for your continued contribution and support. We love having you help us “Build Community One Meal at a Time”

We served 509 meals tonight. The Hoover Ohana carhopped and served 261 meals to 72 cars. 248 went out with our deliverers, who we appreciate every week on delivering meals around the community.

I would like to thank our volunteers for their patience and understanding in honoring our new volunteer policy. We are all being vigilant in keeping our numbers to 10 or less, our distance, wearing masks, and washing hands. Our meals can only continue if we are all well and safe, so MUCH MAHALO for keeping us going! --- Sue Dela Cruz, Meal Coordinator
