Sunapee Happenings
Sunday Morning Surprise!
It’s now mid-November and we are on the sunny, crisp threshold of winter... only the stubborn oaks retain their leaves. Time to button down for winter, rake the last leaves & tuck away garden tools, stack the cordwood, snow tires on, don warm coats and mittens. Check.  We were forewarned when Saturday’s sunshine turned to unpredicted snowfall by nighttime!

Friday December 3 / Tidings of Joy
The Center for the Arts is pleased to announce a special holiday concert this year featuring the Munholand String Quartet and The Lowe Profiles. Come and enjoy the sounds of the season at the Black Box Theatre (located adjacent to Ivy Hall) on the campus of Colby-Sawyer College. The evening starts with an opening reception at 6:30 pm followed by the concert.

The Munholand String Quartet consisting of siblings Ezra, Noah, Anya, and Petra Munholand have been playing together since Petra was five years old. All four began their study of music very young, with Ezra and Noah playing the violin, Anya playing the cello and Petra playing the viola. The group, now in high school and college, has received praise from many regional groups and are excited to perform this Holiday Concert for the community.

The Lowe Profiles, made up of sisters Susie Lowe-Stockwell, Kathy Lowe-Bloch, and Kim Lowe-Beaton, have been singing together since childhood. Growing up in a family of Vaudeville and circus performers, they have fine-tuned their craft to the delight of all. Kathy pursued a career as a singer-songwriter giving the sisters several original Christmas songs to perform along with many traditional holiday classics. Their ability to draw the audience into their music is treat for all!

Please note the seating at the Black Box Theater is limited so please come early. Covid protocols will be in place. Donations at the door will be greatly accepted.

The students completed a civic education program in Washington, DC that included site-based study activities, student workshops on current issues, and meetings with government officials. The 38 students who attended are grateful for the generous community support.

Snapshots in Time
This new book pairs photographs from the collections of seven Kearsarge-Sunapee area historical societies with poetry inspired by these images.

Together, these photos and poems recapture and reimagine many dimensions of life in this region of New Hampshire during the 1800’s and early twentieth century.

This volume represents a collaboration among the CFA’s Literary Arts Guild, the John Hay Poetry Society, and the historical societies of the towns of Andover, Bradford, Goshen, Newbury, Sunapee. Sutton, and Warner.

Visual Verse: A Snapshot in Time is available at Morgan Hill Bookstore, New London; Main Street Bookends in Warner; and Gibson’s Bookstore, Concord;
through the participating historical societies, and online!

Many Town Offices & Libraries & Transfer Stations are observing Holiday hours and will be closed on Thursday & Friday, November 25th & 26th.
until next week
At Thanksgiving time, thoughts turn to all the people in our communities who inconspicuously keep everything moving along in orderly manner. The Police, Volunteer Firemen and EMT’s who respond to emergencies, always on call, keeping us safe. The Highway Department workers who tend to the roads and bridges and plow snow.  Transfer Station crews who help unload our cars and trucks and foster recycling. Local Town Managers & Staff at Town Hall, always ready to answer our myriad of needs from registering cars, boats & dogs .. (and collecting our taxes), and most efficiently have oversight of all essential services, and do it all with a smile. The welfare and food pantry personnel who
answer many critical needs.  Elected Select Board Members and essential committee volunteers who keep government moving smoothly. We’re ever grateful for the amazing teachers and administrative staff who educate and nurture our children.  There are volunteer gardeners who keep our community gardens ever so beautiful;  as well as nonprofits organizations making everyday in the greater Lake Sunapee region ever so great enjoyable  “Hard Work” doesn’t even begin to cover it... there is so (darn) much unseen that town employees and volunteers do day after day, throughout the year... all quietly accomplished simply because they are friends and neighbors who care about  our communities and take pride in their work. We respect and thank each and everyone, especially during the recent pandemic times. Once again we quietly count our blessings for being precisely where we are in this world.
