PBS celebrates the history, culture and traditions of American Indians and Alaska Natives in a special month-long collection of films, short stories and resources. Consider meeting with your mentee on ZOOM, sharing your screen and watching an educational film.

Learn with TedEd
In this TedEd Lesson, you and your mentee will meet a Native American woman named Marie Wilcox, who is the last fluent speaker of Wukchumni. Explore what could be lost when a language disappears. Watch the film and answer discussion questions with your mentee.

There are several staff changes this month. Our amazing College Success Coach Joe Addison will be moving to his hometown of Fort Meyers. The Take Stock Team wants to take some time to thank Joe for the many ways he impacted his co-workers, the mentors he worked with and the hundreds of students he served. While we will definitely miss Joe, we are happy for him as he embarks on this new season of his life. Join us in wishing Joe the very best in his future endeavors!
During his last few weeks at HEF, Joe has been helping onboard our newest team member, Brittany Ervin. Brittany will be taking over all of Joe's schools. She will be working with the mentors and students at these schools: Alonso HS, Blake HS, Farnell MS, Franklin MS, Jefferson HS, Leto HS, Middleton HS, Plant HS, Robinson HS, SLAM, Stewart MS and Tampa Bay Tech HS.

What are you liking most about your new role as a College Success Coach at HEF?
The thing I like most about my new role as a College Success Coach at HEF is having the opportunity to contribute to a student’s personal and educational success as well as getting the chance to further enrich my community.
Who was your favorite teacher and why?
My favorite teacher is my 9th Grade English teacher, Ms. Banister. She took the time to really understand me as a student and as a growing adolescent. She encouraged me to challenge the way I felt about certain topics, and to see the good in things.
What was your first job?
My first Job was working as a Golf Shop Sales Associate at the Augusta National Golf Club when I was 15 years old. During my time as an employee there, I was able to meet Tiger Wood’s mom and I was also able to learn valuable skills in customer service that still help me today.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
If I had a superpower, it would be the ability to warp reality. When I was kid, I always envisioned what it would be like if things were never truly as they appeared. I remember when my mom would tell me it was time to go to school, that the start of the week was really Monday, so getting the opportunity to control reality would be amazing.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
If I could travel anywhere in the world, I would go to Greece. Acropolis is one of the top 5 places on my Bucket List regarding travel due in part to its rich history.

How did you become involved with mentoring through Hillsborough Education Foundation? I began mentoring Joseph when he was in 1st grade through Metropolitan Ministries. When Joseph was in 5th grade, I was asked by the guidance counselor at his elementary school if I would consider continuing as Joseph’s mentor as he continued in the public school system. I really didn’t know much about the HEF - TSIC program at the time, but I was definitely interested in continuing as a mentor for Joseph - especially as it is an opportunity for him to earn a college scholarship!
What has been the most rewarding part of mentoring? Observing and participating in my mentee's education and guiding him as he prepares for high school. I look forward to our weekly sessions & am especially looking forward to resuming in-person mentoring at the school!
What do you believe is the key to being a quality mentor? Consistency, caring & the willingness to listen.
When you are not working with students, how do you prefer to spend your free time? I love to spend time with my family (husband, my adult children & grandchildren)!
What do you hope your mentee will learn from you? To have a positive outlook and always put forth his best effort!

What is the State of College Funding in Florida?
Students across Florida aren't taking advantage of funding that could help them pay for college. Undergraduate enrollment continues to drop, and the college landscape has changed drastically since the pandemic.
