A pioneer of viticulture on the rugged Sonoma Coast, Flowers Vineyards & Winery was founded in 1989 before the Sonoma Coast appellation itself was recognized. Here, Walt and Joan Flowers found a "warm place in a cool climate", a perfect scenario for Burgundian varietals like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
As critics recognized the merit of Walt and Joan's wines, wineries flocked to the rugged landscape. Flowers' success caught the attention of Huneeus Vintners (owners of Quintessa and Faust, among other wineries). After decades as Sonoma Coast pioneers, Joan and Walt retired in 2009 when Huneeus acquired a majority share.
In my opinion, Sonoma Coast is the finest California appellation for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Huneeus is committed to Flowers signature style: the wines are "definitive" Sonoma Coast bottlings. They feature bright, focused fruit, complex minerality, and refreshing coastal acidity. They are as wonderful at the dinner table as they are enjoyed on their own.
"To taste the indisputably original savour of Pinot Noirs from producers such as Flowers, Hirsch and Peay is to marvel at America's Pinot Noir treasures."
