COME TO THE CROWDED TABLE
Summer is filled with excellent memories for me: family road trips, time at the lake, relaxing with a book in a way that doesn’t seem possible the rest of the year. I also remember so many gatherings with family and friends around tables. Outdoor picnic tables, filled with paper plates, freshly grilled hamburgers, and weakly mixed Kool-Aid (always a problem in my family). Indoor dining room tables surrounded by family and friends, each bringing a dish to share. Late nights at the kitchen table passing around containers of ice cream after a busy day at the cabin. What are some of your favorite summer memories? What was on the menu? Who was at the table? As you look forward to the warmer weather, what plans are you making to gather around tables with loved ones?
Throughout his life, Jesus found himself at a lot of tables. He loved to eat with people. For Jesus, and for us today, it was a great way to meet others. Sharing a meal and the space around a table helps us get to know others and to form a deeper sense of community. This was true for Jesus as well. And Jesus didn’t just eat with his friends and family; he ate with some people who were considered outsiders by the rest of society. In fact, he ate with all kinds of sinners, and it made people angry. People started to talk; they thought he drank too much wine, and some called him a glutton. The religious establishment of the day couldn't stomach the fact that he ate with tax collectors and people they judged to be “unclean.” Meanwhile, the more progressive folks of society who rebelled against the establishment hated Jesus for eating with Pharisees. This is just one of the times in his life Jesus learned that you can’t make everyone happy. But Jesus did invite everyone to the table. It didn't matter who you were, it didn't matter what sin you had committed, Jesus said, "let's eat."
Every week at worship we have the opportunity to dine with Jesus. When we gather at the Lord’s Table and remember the night in which he was betrayed, we dine with Jesus and the community that he has created throughout centuries of table fellowship. The first time Jesus shared that meal, he was more than willing to dine with sinners. As he broke bread with his disciples, the table was filled with imperfect people. Peter, the denier, was welcome at the table. Judas, the betrayer, was welcome at the table. Thomas, and all the rest who doubted and deserted him, were welcome at the table. Jesus knew what those men were going to do, and yet he wanted them at the table. They needed to be there. Why? Because Jesus wants everyone at the table, just like we want all of our friends and family to be at the table at our gatherings this summer. Just like we feel the gatherings to be incomplete when someone is missing. That’s how Jesus feels about his family, all of God’s children, being present at the table. And so no one is turned away.
A couple of years ago, I heard a song on the radio that immediately stuck with me. It’s called Crowded Table. And while at first it made me sentimental for some of the summer memories with friends and family, the more I've listened to it, the more I could imagine Jesus singing it to all of us. We sang it at worship on Maundy Thursday this year. Take a listen to the song sometime, or read the lyrics, and you’ll get a little insight on how Jesus feels about you coming to his table. You’ll hear a reflection of the welcome you have in God’s house.

Dear Vinje friends,
We are so grateful for the opportunity we have had to lead music at Vinje. Planning and leading music has filled us with such joy over many years. This past year we were looking forward to helping with a reduced number of services, once Vinje was able to fill the new worship arts position. As the months passed without a candidate, we continued to lead 5 to 6 services per month. Imagine our excitement when indeed a very qualified candidate was hired! We have thoroughly enjoyed the month we spent planning and singing along side Lily! She is quite talented and passionate and is a great addition to Vinje! We will take a much needed break this spring to recharge and plan to rejoin the music team in the fall. We are excited to worship along side you.
In Peace,
Ann and Steve Trochlil

God gave us the Earth to protect and preserve.
The Creation Care Team would like to hear from Vinje members who have installed, to help reduce the carbon footprint, either at work or at home, a heating water, air, or solar system. That includes weather stripping windows and doors, LED lights, and having a hybrid car. Please let Risk Loseth or Suzanne Napgezek know what you have installed.
In addition to energy credits, the Inflation Reduction Act authorized over 8 billion dollars in rebates for upgrades that makes homes more energy efficient and shifts reliance away from fossil fuels.

EXPLORING VINJE'S HISTORY
This month pastor Andrés asked Dee Rosenbrook to share some of the history of women’s circles at Vinje.
When Pastor Andres Albertsen asked me to give a bit of history about Vinje’s circles, I decided to find someone who has been connected to Vinje longer than I have--Phyllis Coleman. Here is what she wrote:
“I was invited into a circle (and choir) by Mary Gilbertson in 1960. We gathered in homes and had Bible studies led by one of the circle members. I do not recall a magazine or book to follow; rather, we reflected on certain Bible passages. Later there was a time when a pastor would lead a session for the Bible study leaders of the various circles and then they would be equipped to lead the study. Meeting in members’ homes was a chance to get to know them more personally, it seemed. Being in a home setting was inviting as refreshments were enjoyed as well as conversation. But eventually some circles chose to meet at Vinje as that was easier for those who could not navigate the steps in some homes. No steps at Vinje! I cherish those home meetings yet!”
As for my story, we moved to Pennock from Mankato in 1987. I had been part of a circle since I graduated from college and wanted to be involved at Vinje as well. As part of my “church shopping” effort, I decided to attend the large group meeting of Vinje women to see how welcome I would feel. I was pleased that I was totally accepted due to the welcoming attitude of Hildegarde Quamme. She invited me in and even paid for my lunch!
I do not know how many circles there have been through the years. Currently, there are only two circles-- Naomi/Sarah/Esther Circle which meets at Vinje for a bible study led by a pastor and Elizabeth Circle at which members take turns leading the Bible study which takes places at Carol Parker’s home. Naomi/Sarah/Esther Circle engages in an outing during each summer. Most recently, they toured St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia followed by lunch at Max’s Grill. Another time they toured Rustic Gardens on a beautiful summer day. Our first meeting during the pandemic was outside at my home; we all wore masks and social distanced. Vicar Kate led the Bible study.
Any women wishing to become part of a circle are welcome. Please contact the Vinje church office for more information. The circles’ meeting dates are announced in the newsletter and bulletin.
