Principal Message
Westmoor Families-
We've been pretty lucky so far with sunny warm weather but it's about to take a turn next week. Please remember that we will go outside to eat lunch as long as there is no rain, the ground is dry, and the temps are 40 degrees or warmer. Please make sure to send students with coats and in warm clothing knowing our temperatures are beginning to drop. We will be outside for the recess as long as temps are above 10 degrees.
I'm excited to welcome back family volunteers next week for our Halloween parties! It feels good to have a little more normalcy back in the building. Thanks to all our parent volunteers that will be in next week. 🎃
Enjoy the weekend,
Mary

School News
Halloween:🎃
Like last year, students will be allowed to come to school on Friday, Oct. 29 in costume. Students will need to come in costumes that are functional since they will be in them all day.
As families begin thinking about children's Halloween costumes, we'd like to share a few reminders:
  • Costumes must be comfortable enough to be worn in school throughout the day, including sitting in class, attending P.E., using the bathroom, eating lunch, etc. Please avoid blow-up costumes or others that restrict movement.
  • Please do not send children to school with replica weapons.
  • Staff will not be able to help children with makeup or accessories, so please make sure children are self-sufficient with their costumes.
  • Face masks must be worn during the day, as usual, so please make sure your child can wear a mask under or as part of his or her costume. Masks must adhere to COVID safety guidelines (i.e., a costume face-covering does not count as an acceptable face mask for the day).

Vision and Hearing Screening
Begins at the end of October
Vision and hearing screening for students in mandated grades is conducted yearly. Students in kindergarten, first grade, and third grade will have their hearing screened. Students in second grade and fourth grade will have their vision and hearing screened. If any difficulty is identified, a re-screening is conducted. If a child fails two screenings, a referral is sent home informing the parent/guardian of the results. You will be asked to return the referral form, completed and signed by a physician, to the health office at Westmoor.
Children who wear glasses should have a current (within two years) Vision Exam Report in their health record. A request for an updated exam report will be sent for those students. Just a friendly reminder, please send your child to school with their glasses. A vision screener will check the condition of your child’s glasses during the screening.
Vision screening is not a substitute for a complete vision evaluation by an eye doctor. While screenings are not diagnostic procedures, they indicate further medical evaluation may be needed. Please call the health office with any questions about the Vision and Hearing Screening Program. Thank you!

District News
Building Leaders Appreciation Week
District 28 is joining the Illinois Principals Association in recognizing the important role of school building leaders during Principal Appreciation Week Oct. 24-30 and Principal Appreciation Day on Friday, Oct. 29.

This state-endorsed recognition was first approved by the Governor of Illinois in 1990 and is celebrated annually. The IPA also joins the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the
National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), and the American Federation of School Administrators (AFSA) to recognize October as National Principals Month.

Principal Appreciation Day on Friday, Oct. 29 is an opportunity for teachers, students, parents and community members to publicly recognize the work, commitment and importance of all building leaders.

District 28 salutes all of our building administrative leaders for navigating the ever-changing landscape of the pandemic while striving to keep students and teachers safe and healthy.

In expressing his deep appreciation, Superintendent Dr. Larry Hewitt said, “Scott, Ginny, Pat, Mary, Christine, Heather, Jenna, and Nora work tirelessly to collaborate, guide, lead, iron-out, protect, problem-solve, and encourage every minute of every school day so that our staff, students, and families have outstanding schools with supportive cultures. Their work is hard and exhausting, but so vital to our success!”
COVID Dashboard, Letters Monitor Cases
The district is maintaining a COVID dashboard to publish more detailed information on positive cases and student quarantines for close contact and travel. The dashboard is updated daily with newly reported positive cases of both students and staff as well as student quarantine daily averages.
The district also notifies staff and parents by email when a COVID-19 positive individual was in a school during their infectious period (48 hours prior to symptom onset for a symptomatic person or 48 hours before specimen collection for an asymptomatic person through the date of last attendance).
Virtual Backpack
District 28 shares local non-profit and community partner flyers here in the District's "Virtual Backpack." Please note that District 28 is making this information available as a courtesy and to provide information about local events and programs in our community. Materials posted on this page are the responsibility of the organizations represented. You can always check the Virtual Backpack webpage as a handy reference!
Coffee Talk for Parents Oct. 26
Join other parents and caregivers for a confidential conversation at this month's CATCH Coffee Talk on Oct 26 at 1:15 p.m.

It’s an opportunity to listen, share, and find support especially with the pace of schoolwork is picking up, the weather changing, and the holidays on the horizon. All of that comes with added stress and pressure. Take time to talk about it. When we connect with one another we feel less alone, and the daily challenges seem a bit more manageable.

Register, and you’ll receive the Zoom link shortly before the event.
