Safety Tips from UMT Police Department
To help you ensure a safe summer, the Upper Makefield Police Department offers these summer safety tips.
Thwart Auto Thieves
To combat a recent wave of motor vehicle thefts, please:
- Lock your car doors
- Remove the key fob and all valuables from your vehicle
- Call 911 immediately to report any suspicious persons, activity, or vehicles
- If possible, install exterior surveillance cameras
Understand Door-to-Door Solicitation Permitting
If the knocks on your door are frequently from door-to-door solicitors, you are not alone: We have recently received numerous complaints. One way to stay informed is to check the Police Department Facebook page. When permits are issued, the Police Department posts a notice that includes the names and photos of permitted solicitors, as well as the dates they are allowed to solicit.
Some groups are exempt from our solicitation policy, including political organizations, political campaigns and religious organizations. Other organizations, such as some public charities, scout troops, civic and service organizations, fire companies and athletic organizations may also be exempted, provided that they notify the Police Chief in writing in advance.
As always, please call the police if you have questions about someone at your door.

Is Your Garage Equipped to Safely Charge Your Electrical Vehicles?
Electric Vehicles (EVs) offer operational savings and environmental benefits. Just remember to equip your garage with safe charging outlets and UL laboratory listed chargers.
Fire Marshal John Kernan offers these safety tips if you are planning to install a home charging station: Consult a licensed electrician about electrical upgrades that may be required before installation. Check that there is a smoke alarm installed on the garage ceiling. Be certain there is nothing nearby that kids or pets could climb to reach the charging station. Finally, never use a multi-prong adaptor or extension cord to operate an EV charger.
Many EV home chargers require an electrical permit. Please call the Township at 215-968-3340 about permit requirements.

Consider Granting Property Access for BOWMA Deer Management
The Township has renewed its annual agreement with Big Oak Whitetail Management Association (BOWMA) to help manage the local deer population. The agreement allows vetted and trained bow hunters to hunt on Township-owned property during Pennsylvania’s archery hunting season, which runs from September 17, 2022 to January 28, 2023. BOWMA is a non-profit organization that donates a portion of its harvest to local food banks.
To improve overall results, Upper Makefield officials urge residents to grant property access to BOWMA. With access to private property, this annual deer management program is more effective in reducing car collisions, deer ticks and property destruction. There is no cost to the property owner.
All BOWMA hunters are over age 21, have passed a proficiency test, attended the Pennsylvania Game Commission's “Successful Bow Hunting” class, are individually insured and have completed a background check.
Visit the BOWMA website for more information and to contact BOWMA to discuss granting access to your property.
