Perspectives
This week’s eNewsletter feature
was written by Rev. Raymond Hylton,
FPCE senior pastor.
Greetings!
I am, by nature, a sentimentalist. I feel things deeply, even though what I am feeling doesn’t always register on my face. As a sentimentalist, memories are very important to me.
Sometimes I hear a song or watch a movie and it moves me to tears, not because of the music or the movie in themselves, necessarily, but because of how they reconnect me to a memory and time in my life.
For the same reason, in my house and office at the church, I hold on to books, cards, letters, and various pictures because of how they speak to me through the years.
There is a section of my bookshelf at church dedicated to an assortment of Bibles purchased or given to me over four decades.
Yesterday, I reached up and took down a Bible given to me by my “brother from another mother” — Danny and I went to different high schools, but we were peas in a pod.

We’d also appreciate warm scarves, as well. The Deacons plan to purchase new hats and gloves, so those items are not needed. Please drop off your items for donation on the coat rack set up in the courtyard entrance vestibule between October 23 and November 2.

A Service in Memory of All Souls – an annual tradition returns to FPCE – will be held Saturday, November 6, in the Sanctuary from 9 to 10 a.m. This service will also be streamed live online at https://live.firstpresevanston.org.Those interested in having a loved one memorialized during the service are invited to add their loved one’s name to the Memorial List at the front desk or call the church at 847-864-1472 and they will add the name for you.
This is the only way we are collecting names. The deadline for submitting names is Monday, November 1. All names collected will be read aloud during the memorial service.
Those who are in need of transportation in order to attend the service in person are invited to contact the front desk at 847/864-1472 to make arrangements.
NOTE: Names previously displayed will be included again this year and will be read aloud during the service. Past names (from 2019) can be found here. Parish Nurse Book Club meets to discuss ‘I Am Malala' on November 2
Our next book club meeting will be on November 2 from 1:30-3 p.m. in the Parlor. We will be reading I Am Malala by Malala Yousaufsei.
Goodreads introduces the book with the following information: “On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive. Instead, Malala’s miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey form a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen she became a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize.” All are welcome to attend!

Current COVD-19 Guidelines for First Pres
The City of Evanston recently mandated the wearing of face masks in all indoor public places to aid in the prevention of spreading COVID-19.
Masks MUST be worn by all individuals over 2 years of age in all public areas of First Pres and SLC. This includes the front desk area, hallways, Roy Hall, the Sanctuary, the Narthex, the Parlor, the Dining Room and all classrooms and meeting rooms in the building.
In staff offices or meetings of small groups, attendees may agree to forego the mask requirement once everyone has arrived, but only in the room where the meeting is taking place.
