Chris Shen chess awards photo
Columbus Academy senior Chris Shen, who's recently been profiled by the Ohio Chess Association and CityScene’s Dublin magazine, was one of just five high-schoolers from across the nation to receive the 2021 Scholar-Chessplayer Award (and $3,000 college scholarship) from the U.S. Chess Federation for excelling in academics, chess and leadership. As the state champion for his age group, Chris placed sixth overall and fourth in the blitz competition at the high school national tournament and also placed fifth overall representing the United States at the U18 North American Youth Chess Championships over the summer. Last spring, he was awarded a Certificate of Accomplishment from The Princeton Prize in Race Relations regional committee for "the important work he has done to advance racial equity and foster positive race relations within his community by creating and running 614 Colors & Minds as well as his work with spreading the love of chess and running an anti-racist book group.”
