Action Plan for New Housing



Council approved Growing Mississauga, the City’s action plan for new housing at Council on March 1, 2023. The plan includes five goals and 23 actions designed to increase the supply of housing, streamline development and building approvals and improve affordability:

Goal 3: Streamline approvals

Goal 4: Making the plan happen

Goal 5: Educate, engage and report

Growing Mississauga builds on the success of the City’s previous housing plans which have positioned Mississauga to meet the Province’s 2051 growth target, helped improve housing affordability, streamlined approval processes and led to the issuance of a record number of building permits in 2022.

The plan also details where private sector and government support is necessary. The City will establish a housing panel to help implement the action plan. This panel will include representation from Council, the construction and development industry, not-for-profit groups and the academic community. Visit Mississauga.ca/housing to learn more or read the full plan.

Streetsville Heritage Conservation District Project



Revisions to the Ontario Heritage Act have come into force and plans for the Streetsville Heritage Conservation District (HCD) can move forward. Streetsville has the largest grouping of heritage buildings in Mississauga and is a strong candidate for HCD status.

The City’s Heritage Planning team have hired a consultant team who will create the technical aspects of the HCD plan. The project will have two parts; a feasibility study which will determine the boundaries of the HCD, and the implementation and designation of the plan.

The feasibility study will involve consultation with the community, to understand what is considered the historical and heritage area of Streetsville and research on the history of Streetsville. The implementation and designation will bring the HCD plan into force through a bylaw passed by Council. The project is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2024.

Help Calm Speeding in Your Neighbourhood with a Slow Down Lawn Sign



Residents can order and place a Slow Down lawn sign in front of their home to encourage safe driving and remind drivers to slow down in their neighbourhoods. Slow Down signs are one of the 99 actions identified in the Vision Zero Action Plan to help Mississauga reach the goal of zero fatal and serious collisions on the road network.

Where can you place a Slow Down lawn sign?

* Directly on or in front of your property

* At least two feet from the curb or the edge of the road

* Three metres or more from a fire hydrant

* Where it doesn’t obstruct any line of sight for pedestrians, cyclists or drivers

Peel Regional Police Auto Theft Summit 2023

To highlight the growing issue of vehicle theft and car jackings in Ontario, the Peel Police Services Board and Peel Regional Police, along with policing partners, hosted its first-ever auto theft symposium.

Auto Theft Summit 2023 kicked off vital discussions about the impact of auto theft on Ontario’s residents and brought together thought-leaders from all impacted sectors to share ideas, perspectives and address the issue. Since 2018, there has been a nearly 90% increase in auto thefts across the police services attending the summit.

The event featured an intimate discussion with Chief’s of Police from across the province and an in-depth panel conversation, including stakeholders from auto manufacturers, insurance and government partners from multiple levels.

The summit culminated with a commitment to move forward on the summit themes of building greater awareness, collaborative partner solutions and real action through enforcement.

The Hazel McCallion Walk for Health



The Hazel McCallion Walk for Health is back! Join Trillium Health Partners Foundation on Sunday, June 4th, 2023 at picturesque Port Credit Memorial Park starting at 9am and register for a 2 km or 5 km walk along the waterfront trail, followed by a Family Fun Festival!

Peel Regional Police Investigation Takes Down Prolific Auto Theft Group

Investigators from the Peel Regional Police 11 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau have recovered 78 stolen vehicles worth over 10 million dollars and arrested numerous members of a prolific auto theft ring.

The more than three-month investigation named Project R&R involved numerous law enforcement agencies working in collaboration with border services officers and investigators from Canada Border Services Agency, as well as partners from the Port of Montreal and Équité Association. These partnering agencies were able to aid in the recovery of several of the stolen vehicles while many others were recovered within the Greater Toronto Area prior to being shipped overseas for resale.

Project R&R was initiated after a trend was identified related to the theft of vehicles, including Range Rovers, within the Region of Peel and the Greater Toronto Area. It is alleged that the group targeted specific vehicles at various locations including Pearson International Airport. Methods of theft included targeted underground parking garages and residential neighbourhoods at night while victims slept.

Investigators identified members of the group actively stealing vehicles and then identified shipping and loading locations. The stolen vehicles were loaded and secured within containers and transported by truck or train to the Port of Montreal to be exported overseas. Over 25 containers were intercepted and held at various locations and ports including Brampton, Montreal, Germany, and Spain. Many stolen vehicles were destined for the United Arab Emirates.

In late December 2022, members of the investigative team executed seven search warrants across the Region of Peel resulting in the following: 



§ Charged persons: 4  

§ Charges Laid: 34

§ Vehicles Recovered: 78 

§ Value of Motor Vehicles: $10 Million

§ Prohibited Magazine seized

§ A quantity of Canadian and US currency seized as proceeds of crime

§ A quantity of Cocaine seized

§ Stolen Ramp recovered (to load vehicles)

The 29th Annual Elmer Safety Awards – Looking For Heroes

Peel Children’s Safety Village, in partnership with Peel Regional Police, is proud to host the 29th Annual Elmer Safety Recognition Awards.  

They are currently accepting nominations for the awards with the following criteria:  

·        Children who reside in the Region of Peel (Brampton, Mississauga, Caledon);

·         Children in junior kindergarten through grade eight are eligible;

·        Children who showed heroic behaviour or performed extraordinary acts of citizenship.  

As many as ten children will receive an award during the ceremony, which is being held at the Peel Children’s Safety Village on Wednesday June 7, 2023. All winners will receive a trophy and a certificate from Peel Regional Police. The deadline for nominations is Friday, April 21st, 2023.

Streetsville’s Historic Walking Tours Return in 2023



The Streetsville Historic Walking Tours will be happening each month from mid-May through to mid-October. Hosted by Richard Collins, these Historic Walking Tours in The Village are an outing not to be missed!

Did you know that Streetsville has the highest concentration of historic buildings in Mississauga? These village tours will take you up-close so you can experience Streetsville’s celebrated landmarks firsthand and hear the story behind the buildings that have played such an important part in our village history. The tour will bring to life how the village gradually transformed from nothing but vast forestland in the early 1800’s, to an industrial mill town, into the lucrative small business and service centre that it is today!

Come out for an interesting and engaging tour that will acquaint you with the village, and make you feel a part of Streetsville’s fascinating history. Along the tour, you will experience many historic landmarks in the village. Some of these key landmarks include: the Montreal House, Timothy Street House, Abigail Street House, The Franklin House, Streetsville United Church, Streetsville Memorial Cemetery and the Streetsville Cenotaph.

The Historical Walking Tours run for 1.5 hours in length, but you are welcome to come and go as you please. The tour is free and no pre-registration is required. The tours begin at the clock in the Village Square (Queen St. S and Main St.) Please arrive promptly, wear comfortable shoes and bring a bottle of water. Don’t forget to bring your camera, so you can capture the picturesque scenery Streetsville has to offer. During the tour, you have the opportunity to ask questions and interact with fellow community members.

Borrow, Grow and Return: Join the Seed Library



Spring is here and with it comes the return of Mississauga Library’s ninth annual Seed Library program. Residents are invited to participate in online and in-person workshops and events from March onward throughout the gardening season. The workshops are free with registration and suitable for all ages.

In addition to being a rewarding experience for individuals and families to discover the joy of gardening, the program also aims to support local food systems, build seed saving literacy and promote locally adapted plants.

The library is currently accepting seed donations to the Seed Library. Thanks to seed donations from the community, over 2,100 seed packages were distributed to residents across the city in 2022.

Scoop that Dog Poop



It important for dog owners to pick up after their pooches and properly dispose of the waste and the bags used to collect it. Doing so keeps recreational, public areas and green spaces clean. It also reduces the risk of spreading disease to people or other animals.

Dog waste takes months to break down and when left on the ground, it cannot be used as a fertilizer. When it rains, dog waste soaks into groundwater or flows with rain and meltwater into the City’s stormwater system, which flows to nearby streams, creeks, rivers and ultimately Lake Ontario, potentially polluting our drinking water. Polluted water sources require more expensive water treatment before they can be used for drinking water. Contaminated water also affects aquatic wildlife and plants and makes swimming areas unsafe.

Bring dog waste bags with you when walking your dog. Remember to place dog waste in waste containers (garbage bins) or a designated dog waste container or take it home and throw it out with your garbage. You can be fined for not picking up after your dog.
