Baldwin Alum Promoted to Georgia Tech Associate Head Coach
|
|
Baldwin High School alum Tasha Butts has been promoted to associate head coach for the Georgia Tech women's basketball team.
A native of Milledgeville, Ga., Tasha Butts attended Baldwin High School where she was a consensus All-American and Gatorade Player of the year. Her high school jersey No. 23 was retired in December 2000.
Tasha Butts joined Tech’s staff as an assistant coach with Fortner’s arrival in April 2019. A coaching veteran and former WNBA player, Butts helped the Yellow Jackets to a storied season in 2020-21. After finishing in third place in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings with a 12-6 league record, Georgia Tech earned an at-large bid to the 2021 NCAA Championship and advanced to the Sweet 16 for just the second time in program history. Tech’s 12 conference wins tied the program record, while its No. 3 seed in the ACC Tournament marked the highest-ever by the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech finished the season ranked No. 22 in the USA Today/WBCA Top 25 Postseason Coaches Poll.
Prior to her arrival on The Flats, Butts served as an assistant coach at LSU for eight years where she was part of four 20-win seasons and six NCAA Tournament appearances. She helped ink three top-20 recruiting classes and helped LSU return to national prominence in 2018, cracking the AP Top 25 poll for the first time in four years.
Before her time at LSU, Butts recorded three successful seasons as an assistant coach at UCLA. While with the Bruins, UCLA made two NCAA Tournament appearances, compiled a 72-26 overall mark and earned back-to-back second-place finishes in the Pac-10 Conference. Butts also worked for one season at Duquesne University.
A four-year letter winner at Tennessee, Butts helped the Lady Vols to a 124-17 record from 2000-04, with four NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16, Final Four and consecutive National Championship game showings, and four SEC regular-season championships.
Tasha Butts graduated from Tennessee with a bachelor of science in sports management and minor in business administration in 2004. She was chosen by the Minnesota Lynx with the 20th selection in the 2004 WNBA Draft, and spent time playing professionally in both the WNBA and overseas.

Baldwin High School STAR Student &
STAR Teacher
|
|
Baldwin High School senior Carlos Abella-Ramirez was selected as the 2021 STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) Student at the school level. He chose Mrs. Jessica Thompson as his STAR Teacher.
Carlos plans to attend Georgia Tech this fall to major in computer science, a subject he is very passionate about. His career aspirations include working at a big tech company, developing new technologies, and improving existing ones. He said he chose Mrs. Thompson as his STAR Teacher because she has been the most influential teacher for him ever since he started high school.
"I've been with her since my first day at Baldwin. I started taking Ninth Grade Literature with her and ever since then, I've either been in Yearbook (which she advises) or in one of her English classes. She has always been super supportive of me and it's nice always having someone to talk to when I come into class. This past year especially. I've asked her for advice on moving out and attending college and she's always super helpful. Not to mention that she's written countless letters of recommendation for scholarships and colleges for me. I really appreciate everything that she's done for me and I couldn't have asked for a better teacher to spend my four years in high school with."
Mrs. Thompson has been teaching since 2007. She has been with the Baldwin County School District since 2008. She describes Carlos in three words: steadfast, responsible, and reliable.
"He has a quiet demeanor that belies the true depth of his personality, particularly his sense of humor. He is witty and kind and has a leadership style that is built upon teamwork and collaboration. He is a self-starter and is dedicated to any task he takes on. If he says he is going to do something, he does it, without needing his teacher to remind him or follow up with him."
The STAR program honors high school seniors for producing the highest scores in their schools on the SAT and are in the top 10% of their class based on grade point average. Those students then select a teacher who has had a big impact on them along their educational careers as their STAR teacher. Each of the three high schools: Baldwin High School, Georgia Military College Prep School and John Milledge Academy, name school-level winners each year to compete for the county honor.
The PAGE Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program is in its 63rd year and is sponsored, administered and promoted by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) and the PAGE Foundation. Since its creation, the STAR program has honored nearly 28,000 students and the teachers they have selected as the most influential to their academic achievement. For 35 years, the Milledgeville-Baldwin County Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Milledgeville have been local sponsors.

Nationally Renowned Cartoonist Tim Oliphant is Guest Artist at Oak Hill Middle School
|
|
Oak Hill Middle School students are being treated to another year of having a guest artist in residence: Tim Oliphant for the next two weeks. Mr. Oliphant, better known as Mr. Ollie, will be working with Oak Hill students helping them showcase their creative talents!
Mr. Ollie is a self-taught artist. Born in Nashville, TN in 1961, he took his first art class in the fifth grade and found he had a knack for drawing. After that, he and his parents moved to Lewisburg, TN where he had no art in schools from 6th grade to the 12th grade, so he was mostly self-taught. After attending a small art school in Franklin, TN he then began in 1983 freelancing his cartoons and illustrations to newspapers, ad agencies, and magazines in Nashville and throughout Tennessee. Since then, his work has appeared in state, regional, and national magazines.
Mr. Ollie’s residency is a joint collaboration between the Baldwin County School District and Allied Arts.
