Movie in Focus:
Film Discussion Group
I Am Love (Italy, 2009)
Monday January 4
11am
|
|
I Am Love (Io sono l'amore) from 2009 is a romantic drama from Italian director Luca Guadagnino. With expert, understated performances (particularly from Tilda Swinton as the matriarch of a wealthy Milanese family), the director’s elegant visual style tells a story that could easily have veered off into a soap opera. Instead, the film becomes the stuff of grand opera. The agitated John Adams score only adds to its intensity.
The film is available for free streaming on Kanopy and Hoopla.

Author Talk with Leslie Brody
Sometimes You Have to Lie: The Life and Times of Louise Fitzhugh, Renegade Author of Harriet the Spy
Tuesday January 12
7pm
|
|
Join us for a presentation by author and playwright Leslie Brody on her newly published biography Sometimes You Have to Lie: The Life and Times of Louise Fitzhugh, Renegade Author of Harriet the Spy. The talk of publishing circles, Ms. Brody’s book brings the rich, creative, and radical life of Fitzhugh to life, from her pampered girlhood in the segregated south to her career in New York as a painter, writer, and illustrator. The book captures the spirit of the mid-sixties and its confluence of youth culture, sexual politics, social justice, and individual freedom that Fitzhugh reflected in her writing. The tremendous success of Harriet the Spy (now a children’s literary classic) made certain Fitzhugh would be remembered primarily as a writer, but Brody will introduce to us the entire artist.

Get a preview of Chris’s style on his library cooking blog Trash Panda.
January kicks off soup season and Chris has something really special this month - chowdah! And, true to form, this recipe is unlike any you’ve had before. We'll learn how to make an amazing mix to steam the quahogs in. We’ll also learn about fond (French for “base” or “foundation”) and layering flavors to create a perfect soup. Emphasis will be on the timing - when to add things to the pot - and on good temperature control. Join us and learn how to make, in Chris’s words, “ the most delicious thing in existence.”

Set in the majestic French Alps, director Ruben Ostlund's Force Majeure (Sweden, 2014) is a subtle film that teeters between drama and dark comedy as it probes the tensions in a marriage over a week-long skiing holiday. The film is available to stream for free on Kanopy.
