It was only 8:20 in the morning on February 8, 2023 when a middle school student flashed a knife from his backpack to some other students. One of the other students decided to tell a teacher.
School administrators and security officers were quickly notified, the student was found and taken to the office. When he was asked if there was a knife in the backpack, the student explained he had brought it to school “for fun.”
The student’s parents were notified and the boy was given a 45-day suspension from attending school. The incident at Cordova Middle School was one of three in which weapons were discovered at area schools during the month of February. The other weapons were guns.
In one gun incident a student at Hickory Ridge Middle School was seen pointing a black Colt 45 handgun at another student on school grounds. That student was arrested and received a 180-day suspension. In the second handgun incident uncovered a 40-caliber Glock 23 gun with extended magazine containing 27 rounds in a student’s backpack.
That student had entered Craigmont High School through a side door opened by another student. He was also arrested and handed a 180-day suspension.
The students who revealed the weapons all were awarded through the Trust Pays program.
Instagram threat exposed
by trustworthy student
While hidden weapons carried by students are among the most dangerous incidents that can happen in school, the Trust Pays program uncovers many other problems when a student tells a trusted adult in school what’s going on.
These problems range from thefts, to packing drugs to gang fights.
Five students were involved in a fight in front of the principal’s office at Northeast Academy February 20. After order was restored a student stepped up to reveal an Instagram post in which one student two days earlier had said
"I’m gonna shoot up Kingsburg High School after Northeast."
Thanks to the information provided the student who posted the threat was arrested and taken to a police station for investigation.
