FEATURED STORY

Finding Strength: The Spaulding Rehabilitation Podcast

Finding Strength: The Spaulding Rehabilitation Podcast is a platform to bring together voices in the rehabilitation community. Monthly episodes will be inspired by research conducted out of the Spaulding Research Institute and stories from people with lived experiences. We aim to show how research has real meaning for real people.

First three episodes now live!

Episodes 1 & 2: A special 2-part kickoff inspired by the New England Journal of Medicine article “From Survival to Survivorship – Framing Traumatic Injury as a Chronic Condition,” featuring guest speakers Jeffrey Schneider MD, Diana Tenney, Dave Estrada JD, and Juan Hererra-Escobar MD, MPH.

Episode 3: Joseph Giacino PhD, Nicole Godaire, and Tracey Macarty discuss our ability to predict outcomes after moderate to severe brain injury.

Listen and subscribe to stay connected to the groundbreaking work coming out of our research labs! The production is a collaboration amongst Spaulding’s three Model System programs and the Rehabilitation Outcomes Center at Spaulding. READ MORE

Feasibility and Utility of a Flexible Outcome Assessment Battery for Longitudinal Traumatic Brain Injury Research: A TRACK-TBI Study

Yelena Bodien, PhD, Joseph Giacino, PhD, and colleagues helped create the Flexible Outcome Assessment Battery (FAB) for patients with traumatic brain injury, which proved feasible across the entire spectrum of severity and discerned different levels of function among traditionally "untestable" patients.

For TRACK-TBI, a longitudinal study being conducted at 18 level I trauma centers, a Flexible Outcome Assessment Battery (FAB) was created to accommodate participants across the full spectrum of injury severity.

Spinal Cord Injury Model System

Grant Schleifer graduated from Harvard Medical School in 2022. During his residency he will be researching GI function after SCI. He joined Spaulding’s SCIMS to utilize any information that’s available to further his research. Prior to that, Grant was a special education teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, D.C. His medical interests include exercise, autonomic dysreflexia, neurorehabilitation, spasticity, metabolism, and preventive care. His recreational interests include cooking, travel, British literature, running marathons, cycling, and cats.

Burn Injury Model System

Dr. Huan Deng joined our team as a postdoctoral research fellow from China in Fall of 2021 and is currently working on a project that digitally assesses levels of social participation in burn survivors. Huan completed her PhD with a focus on vascularity of hypertrophic scar after burn injury, and is an occupational therapist with experience working with burn patients. On a more personal note, she loves spicy food and hiking!

Traumatic Brain Injury
