New Faces Theatre: A Spare Me

Mark your calendar for H-F Theatre's New Faces production — A Spare Me — which will run at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24, & Friday, Feb. 25, and at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, in the new Performing Arts Center. With Earth’s resources and population dwindling, humanity puts everything it has left into one final generation of children. They are selected for their genius and furnished with everything they could require — including genetically-engineered spare life forms that will ensure no child’s existence is ended by something as trivial as death. But when academy student Sel is replaced by his spare after a tragic accident, his friends begin to reconsider their own identities. As they uncover the dark secrets behind their own lives, both the children and the spares set out to prove they have minds of their own. Don't miss this unique show, directed by J.R. Willard-Rose, and featuring our newest H-F performers. Ticket details are coming soon!

New Emergency Day Plan: E-Learning

In lieu of "snow days," H-F will now plan to use e-learning days in place of emergency days when necessary. E-learning will be utilized for days when inclement weather — or other circumstances — prohibit safe travel and learning in school. An e-learning day would be primarily an asynchronous experience for students in that they will work independently on assignments with teachers readily available to provide support. Teachers would supply instruction and assignments that are consistent with course expectations and outcomes. On an e-learning day, teachers would post their lessons in Google Classroom by 8:30 a.m. and would communicate due dates and times to their students. They would be available to communicate with students via Google Classroom during designated times and by email from 7:30 a.m.-3:15 p.m.

Families would be notified of an e-learning day directly from H-F via the School Messenger phone and email service. Notification would also be posted on the school website. Please know that H-F will make every effort to have in-person learning, when it is safe and conditions allow. Decisions made regarding weather-related emergency days are made very carefully with consideration given to travel conditions, bus routes and, of course, the safety of our students and staff. For questions about e-learning, please contact Interim Principal Dr. James Mitchem at 708-335-5541, [email protected].

New State Law: Mental Health Days for Students

Illinois Senate Bill 1577 went into effect on Jan. 1: “(The bill) amends the Compulsory Attendance Article of the School Code. With respect to the exceptions to the compulsory attendance requirement, (this bill) provides that absence for cause by illness shall include the mental or behavioral health of a student for up to 5 days for which the child need not provide a medical note, in which case the child shall be given the opportunity to make up any school work missed during the mental or behavioral health absence. After the second mental health day used, the child may be referred to the appropriate school support personnel.” (Click here to read the full law.)

To utilize this new option, when calling your student off school (call 708-799-3000, press 2), please specifically state that the student is using a mental health day in order for us to maintain accurate attendance records. If you have any questions about this law or about attendance, please contact Associate Principal Craig Fantin at 708-335-5593, [email protected]. If your student is in need of additional social-emotional support, please reach out to our school social workers by calling 708-335-5612 or by visiting this webpage.
