SUMMER'S A GREAT TIME TO STITCH... The ornament above from The Plum Stitchery, our current trunk show, says it all! STITCH OF THE MONTH

FRENCH KNOTS

Stitchers are often hesitant to try french knots but they look fantastic for animals, Santa's beard, flower centers or anything that needs some texture. I taught myself how to do them many years ago but in my research for this newsletter, I looked at lots of videos and charts and realized I was doing them incorrectly. I usually do two wraps around the needle with the thread. This is called a Colonial Knot. A French Knot is only worked with one wrap around the needle. The picture below is of a canvas pictured in a Ruth Schmuff (Bedecked & Bedazzled) instructional video showing how to do French Knots. Of all the videos I watched, this is the best one I found. TIP OF THE MONTH

Sometimes a customer brings in a finished piece that's dirty or stained. It's frustrating and since we don't recommend dry cleaning canvases, it's important to always wash your hands before you work on a project. In the summer when you might be stitching somewhere you cannot wash your hands try baby wipes. The travel size is easy to throw in your beach bag or purse and will rid your hands of sunscreen, makeup and dirt. The one pictured is from Seventh Generation but any brand will work.

StitchRip They have arrived! Our favorite stitch ripper from years back has returned. We are thrilled Sandy's Artisan Woodworks is currently making them. We've been allowing customers to use ours but it remains in the shop for safe keeping. Now you can get your own.

UPCOMING CLASS

Kid's Classes One Day Class for children 9-13 Enjoy an fun afternoon learning how to needlepoint at HON. During the class you will learn how to do the basic Continental Stitch. Your materials will include a 3" round design on 13m canvas, a jewelry box or luggage tag it will fit into once it's finished, threads, needles, a threader and written instructions to refer to after class. We will happily put your canvas into your box or tag once it's completed.*

Luggage tags come in the colors shown here. The boxes come in the same colors with the addition of a light pink and black.
