On November 20, members of the newly elected Delta Township Board were sworn into office. Due to Covid-19 guidelines and with an abundance of caution, each board member was sworn in separately by Clerk Clark.

On November 10, Courtney Nicholls, joined the Delta Township team as our new Finance Director. An Allen Park native, Courtney, most recently was the Manager for the City of Dexter. She has a Masters of Public Administration degree from Wayne State University and is passionate about government finance. With her background and experience Courtney is an excellent addition to our community. Please help us give her a warm welcome.

The Delta Township Fire Department welcomes Firefighter/ Paramedic Amanda West to our family!

Amanda comes to us from Lake Superior State University where she received her paramedic training and degree. Amanda served in the U.S. Coastguard, as well as with the Kodiak (Alaska) Fire Department.

To protect and minimize exposure for residents and Township staff the administrative offices are closed to the public. We expect to be closed through December 8, following the new COVID-19 restrictions under the State of Michigan Pause to Save Lives initiative.

During this time, nearly all township services are still available via phone, email, or by appointment. You may make payments by utilizing electronic payment methods or at the two drop boxes located on the North and East side of the Delta Township Administration Building located at 7710 W. Saginaw Hwy. All employees will be working, but we will have limited staff in the Administration building. Employees who can accomplish their jobs working remotely will do so under current MIOSHA work rules established by the State of Michigan.

We will continue to follow federal and state guidelines and will continue to reassess. We expect this closure through December 8, however, it could extend longer.

The Delta Township Fire Department, Delta Patrol, and Water and Sewer operations will continue to provide essential services. In addition, the Delta Recycling center will remain open at regular times. Parks and pathways will also remain open.

We do have staff available by phone or remotely to ensure the continuation of Township services. Please let us know if you have any questions regarding Township services.

On November 11, the Michigan Department of Transportation reopened I-496 to traffic in both directions after a nearly year long reconstruction project.

The project, which was the first in Governor Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan Plan began in early spring 2020 with an investment of approximately $60 million to improve I-496 between I-96 and Lansing Road. The work included reconstructing the freeway and ramps, preventive maintenance on all the bridges in the project area, and making operational improvements to the entrance and exit ramps at the I-96, Creyts Road, and Waverly Road interchanges.

In addition to the freeway reconstruction, Waverly Road, between St. Joe Highway and Lansing Road was completely reconstructed. Improvements included the addition of a non-motorized, shared-use pathway with a pedestrian crossing enhancements for crossings of Waverly Road, railroad tracks, Lansing Road and Old Lansing Road. The pathway portion of the project was completely grant funding through a combination of federal and local funds, including the Ingham County Parks and Trails Millage.

Multi-agency collaboration aided in improving the Waverly Road freeway Interchange to I-496, replacement of the railroad crossing, and the building of the pedestrian pathway, which enhances the walkability between Delta and Lansing Townships.

Greenwood District Studios, a minority owned production and content company has leased the old vacant movie theatre behind the Lansing mall as their new place of business. The company, which was named for and pays homage to the once affluent Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Also known as Black Wall street, the neighborhood and businesses within, were burned to the ground in 1921 during the race riots.

Greenwood District Studios is Michigan's first black-owned production company. The production company plans to be fully up and running by 2022 and hopes to attract and develop the careers of young minority people interested in the film production and distribution industry and will specialize in telling stories from the minority perspective.

At the October 19 board meeting, the Delta Township Board approved the 2021 Township Holiday Schedule.

With snow just around the corner, Delta Township property owners are reminded that they need to make arrangements to clear the snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property.  Section 34-92  of the Delta Township Code of Ordinances requires that snow and ice be removed from the sidewalk within 24 hours of a snowfall. The code applies even if the property is vacant or the building on the premises is unoccupied.

On November 16, the Delta Township Proclaimed November 28 as Small Business Saturday here in Delta Township. Delta Township is one of the 7,500, and growing, communities across the U.S. that have joined the Small Business Saturday movement. Fall De-Leafing Yard waste recycling will be available free for Delta Township residents only, October 17-December 5. Identification and resident verification is required.

To get a jumpstart on Holiday cheer, beginning Tuesday, December 1, Delta Township will host a North Pole Express Mail box where area youth can drop their letters to Santa. The Mailbox will be located on the South side of the Delta Township Administration Building located at 7710 W. Saginaw Highway.

Letters will be regularly picked up by Santa's most trusted helpers and will be hand delivered to the big man himself. Santa will read and respond to each letter with a return address. For more information or for questions, please contact the Delta Township Park Department at517-323-8555.

Eaton County Road Commission (ECRC) and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) are the agencies charged with snow removal in Delta Township. MDOT is charged with snow removal for I-96, I-69, I-496 and Saginaw Highway, ECRC is responsible for all other public roadways.

Please note that no person shall park any vehicle, including a vehicle used for commercial or recreational purposes, or any trailer on either side of any highway, freeway, street, or roadway located within the township between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. of any day.
