Dear Associate and Elected Audubon Members, On behalf of the Executive Board I wish that you and those nearest you are safe and taking care of yourselves. What is certain, during these uncertain times, is that we can eagerly anticipate our onsite 2021 Fall Exhibition from October 25th to November 5th at the revered Salmagundi Club. We will not, however, host our 2021 Exhibition Reception due to Covid 2019 restrictions. Looking back over the last year we were able to enjoy our 2020 Exhibition on our website until the time of our 2021 exhibition. While we endured restrictions imposed by the Pandemic, we found a new way to announce our Annual Fall Exhibition. Instead of the hard copy usually presented in person to art related institutions, Pat Hutchinson, our Newsletter Editor, created a beautiful Digital Graphic Announcement of Audubon's 2021 Exhibition that was distributed via email and could be printed by the recipient in high quality. As an added Membership benefit, also during this challenging time, we found a way to honor our members, something that has been long in the planning, via a showcase that allows interested Audubon Members who submit their requests for inclusion to have selected works posted with comments for a one-month period on social media sites. Our first post on Audubon Artists Members Showcase is Vincent Nardone, now Vice-President and Admissions Chair, who served as President with dignity and caring for fifteen years. We have also been blessed with the support of four new Associate Members committed to joining the Exhibition Hanging Team to assist Miklos Sebek, Vice-President and Exhibition Chair in the Herculean task of hanging our Exhibition on two levels at the Salmagundi Club. This Newsletter includes the recently created Legacy section which features Daniel E. Greene in an article by his devoted wife,Wendy Caporale. Our Artist's Spotlight shines on Jenny Lin, Pastel Director and former Catalog Chair, who describes the evolution of her career and shares her poignant and powerful pastels. In the meantime Audubon's ongoing online Covid exhibit has been an intriguing and intense representation of our Members' heartfelt experiences and artwork created during this difficult time. 2. The Audubon Artists combined 2018 & 2019 Exhibition catalog under one binding can be ordered in our Checkout section for $35 (includes shipping)...this is an unusual but very creative presentation of two exhibition years as designed by Joe Villa, our catalog editor.
3. The Audubon Artists classic 75th Anniversary Catalog, published in 2017, is still available for $40 (includes shipping) to be ordered in our Checkout section.
4. If you have your own website address, consider making a link to your website in the Membership List for a $15 service charge. This link can be added when you renew your membership.

Artist Spotlight: Jenny Lin
|
Jenny M. Lin, both an Audubon Artists and Allied Artists of America board member, began her international journey as an artist in Changhua, Taiwan, where she was born and lived with her parents and six siblings. She attended Tajen Pharmaceutical College and came to America with her brother in 1974. She pursued her interest in art by taking classes in fine art at Youngstown University, Ohio.
Jenny followed her lifelong dream and relocated to New York City in 1996, where she found work as a paralegal at an immigration law firm and as a pharmacy technician at Rite Aid. In addition, she taught art to children and seniors at Ling Jiou Mountain, a non-profit Buddhist society in Queens New York.

In 2000 she discovered her love for pastels and focused on creating landscapes and still life. Jenny said that art is her passion, bringing enjoyment and inspiration to her life. She described her process as an artist: Using a "unique eye" for subject matter, she creates each painting from the heart, so that "the work of art speaks for itself and has a life of its own."

Among the milestones in her distinguished career, she has exhibited at the National Arts Club, the Salmagundi Club, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office Gallery in Manhattan and Queens, New York, Gallery 53 in Meriden, Connecticut, the Canton Museum of art in Ohio, and the Sarasota Art Center in Florida. Besides the United States her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in China, France, Japan, Spain and Taiwan. Her work is represented by the 99 Degree Art Center in Taipei, Taiwan.
Since 2014 Jenny has been a board member and catalog chair with Allied Artists of America. She is a signature member with the Pastel Society of America and the Connecticut Pastel Society. In 2009 she became a board member with Audubon Artists, Inc., as well as that group's Pastel Medium Director since 2014. Her other associations include North American Pastel Artists Association (Vice President since 2009); North American Taiwanese Women's Association/New York Chapter (president in 2016); and is a board member with Pastel Association of Taiwan.
Jenny has won numerous awards with the above - mentioned organizations, including the Gold Medal of Honor in 2006 at the Audubon Artists annual exhibition, and a Silver Award from the International Pastel Artists Invitational Exhibition at Chiang Kai-shek memorial Hall. She is a recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and has received multiple awards with the Audubon Artists, the Connecticut Pastel Society, exhibitions held by Pen and Brush of New York, and the Taiwan Center.

Reflection on Snow, Central Park

Jenny currently resides in Sarasota, Florida and has two children.

Elected Member Jeff Berman has 12 pieces in a members show at BWAC Arts near Van Brundt Street, Brooklyn.
These include several watercolors, mixed media compositions and waxed pastels. These art pieces include on-site watercolors done during a variety of events at BWAC and plein aire work completed around Brooklyn. Many of the pieces feature musicians performing solo and in groups.
Elected Members Arlette Malivernier and Leslie Ovechka will exhibit their most recent original hand pulled prints in The Art of Printmaking-A Cutting Edge at the Ocean County Artists Guild in Island Heights, New Jersey. www.ocartistsguild.org. They will be joined by their fellow printmakers showing a variety of dynamic prints. The exhibit runs from November 4 through November 28, 2021 and a reception for the Artists will be held on Sunday, November 7 from 1:00 - 4:00pm.
Elected member Villo Varga's oil portrait, Masks, was included in a fine art exhibition and film festival titled Outsider/Outsider from May 21 through June 13, 2021 at the Local Project Gallery, Long Island City, NY. The event was organized by the Long Island City Artists.
Elected member Marlene Weidenbaum's pastels will be on exhibit from September 25 to November 21, 2021 at the Mark Gruber Gallery, New Paltz Plaza, Main Street, New Paltz, NY. For gallery hours and other information, contact the Mark Gruber Gallery. |
Daniel E. Greene
Daniel E. Greene, N.A. was a renowned painter of portraits, still life and figurative works in addition to multiple series that focused on auctions, games and the New York City Subway. Greene's formal education began at the Art Students League in New York under the tutelage of Robert Brackman. Greene was honored with myriad accolades over his 60-plus year career. Among the most significant are membership in the National Academy of Design in 1969, induction into the Pastel Society of America Hall of Fame,1983 and the Oil Painters of America Hall of Fame, 1992, the 1999 Artist Fellowship Benjamin West Clinedinst medal for exceptional artistic achievement, the annual honoree and gold medal from the Salmagundi Club, 2003, and the 2001 Portrait Society of America Gold Medal of Honor for a distinguished body of work. Most recently, he and his wife, artist Wende Caporale, were presented with the 2019 Figurative Artists Convention's Lifetime Achievement Award.

Greene was a highly regarded teacher who taught at the Art Students League and the National Academy in New York as well as in private workshops internationally. He authored two definitive books, Pastel and The Art of Pastel, which have been translated into nine languages, and produced six instructional videos that continue to be collected and utilized by artists worldwide. He has taught more than 10,000 students and his books and videos have reached in excess of 100,000 artists worldwide.
Highly regarded as a formidable portrait artist, he was known for painting leaders in government, banking, education, industry and the arts. There are over 1,000 of Greene's works featured in more than 700 personal and public collections worldwide, most notably the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; Cincinnati Museum of Fine Arts, OH; Columbus Museum of Art, GA; Butler Institute of American Art, OH; the House of Representatives, and the Smithsonian, Washington, DC. Additionally, in a 1994 White House ceremony, Greene presented a pastel portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt to First Lady Hillary Clinton. Greene was considered by The Encyclopedia Britannica to be the foremost pastelist in the United States.
Six highly successful exhibitions of Greene's Subway series were featured on national and international television programs and in more than fifty international magazines and newspapers including ARTnews Magazine, New York Magazine, The New York Observer, The New York Times, Disegnare & Dipingere (Italy) and Artistes Magazine (France). His 2004 exhibition Subway Paintings at the New York Transit Museum at Grand Central Terminal was the inaugural event in the centennial year of the New York Subway and a compilation of his subway paintings represented New York City on the cover of the official guide to the Republican National Convention.
Daniel Greene's personal work defied the conventional academic approach to realism in his highly imaginative still life and enigmatic figurative compositions. But it is the work featuring the NYC Subway for which Greene will be remembered and that has remained popular among discerning collectors.

Greene, Studios and Subways, An American Master, His Life and Art in conjunction with a retrospective that traveled to the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, OH, the Mattatuck Museum, Waterbury, CT and the Deland Museum, FL. The Daniel E. Greene Estate is handled by Cavalier Galleries, Greenwich, CT; Nantucket, MA; Palm Beach, FL and New York City and T. H. Brennen, Scottsdale, AZ.
