“I’d rather be in the mountains thinking about God
than in a church thinking about mountains.”
John Muir
There is a new movement happening in the United States that is called
“Wild Church.” There are over 200 churches that currently call themselves Wild
Churches. On Sunday, May 21 at 2 pm the Lake Country Cluster, with the
blessing and support of the Greater Milwaukee Synod’s Mission Table, will be
hosting a Wild Church Worship event at Lapham Peak State Park, in the
Homestead outdoor shelter. This is a time to experience this way of worshiping
and wonder together about how this approach might be a blessing to
congregations across the synod!
At our Wild Church worship, you will experience stories of awe. You might
help build a nature altar. You will learn to “hear like a deer”. You will sing with
other lovers of nature. You will pray a Celtic prayer. You will learn how Jesus
used creation to renew himself. You will experience an interactive nature
spirituality message. There will be refreshments and time to walk or hike
afterward. There is no cost to come and be part of this opportunity.
The early church scholar Eriugena said that there are two books of
revelation through which God teaches, the small book of scripture and the large
book of creation. We should not ignore the revelation of creation. Wild Church
loves the scriptures but seeks to learn from the creation of God all around us.
Jesus was a Wild Church evangelist. He almost never went to the city to renew
himself. He always went to the wilderness, desert or a mountain to be close to
God.
Pastor Larry Harpster, the interim pastor at All Saints Lutheran Church in
Wales, WI will be leading the service. He is a known crazy nature person who
loves fishing, hiking, Celtic spirituality, and National Parks. If you have any
questions about this event, feel free to reach out to Pr. Larry at 262-344-5942.
