FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

I must confess; it sure is great to have our students back at Hayes!  It makes us all realize why we are educators and their absence underscores our need to connect with our students.  We have learned a great deal during these uncertain times.  As educators, we have improved our technology skills and have found new and innovative ways to build relationships, enhance connections and provide content that is accessible and achievable.  We have learned the importance of flexibility.  We have become better problem solvers and design lessons to be more personalized for our students.  We have learned strategies to help students become more independent learners and to utilize resources that they have never used before.  We have targeted support for our struggling learners and we have been able to stretch higher level learning to new heights.  Now, the challenges are still present, however, I could not be more proud of our teachers and students who have managed and overcome a once in one-hundred year pandemic!

As we prepare for Black History Month in February, we pause to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday.  We have been starting each day this week (and next) with an insightful quote by Dr. King.  Beginning February 1st, students will highlight famous Black Americans during our morning announcements.  Our teachers are weaving in Black History to their lessons all month long. On February 17th, students from across the Delaware School District will be presenting, "Soldiers on a Journey through Black History" in a virtual showcase for our community.  This year marks the 95th year that America celebrates during the month of February and we are proud to be a part of it.

"Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed."                               -Booker T. Washington

Community MLK Programs

As you know, our community cannot meet together for the annual MLK celebration program. Ohio Wesleyan University took the lead to produce and record a panel discussion. It includes several community leaders including our own staff member, Francine Butler. The event will be available on the OWU Facebook page at 8:30am on Monday morning: https://www.facebook.com/OhioWesleyanUniversity

In addition, the Delaware County Library is hosting a virtual live performance on January 18 at 6:30pm. to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King.  Read more at this link. The program is free but registration is required.
